cultured? I have been reading alot of posts of people wanting to know what some bacterias are or if you have cultured them. So what have you/your child cultured so far? How has it affected you/your child?

I was not diagnosed until I was 31 so I never had sputum cultures done on a regular basis until that time. But in those 3 years, I have cultured staph, pseudomonas, and I have been colonized with more than one strain of stenotrophomonas maltophilia for over a year now. I was pretty sick with the pseudomonas and have luckily not cultured it since Oct. 03. The steno (which has become resistant to all but one or two antibiotics) has caused me pretty significant probs...numerous lung infections and hemoptysis. My lung function has declined as well over the past 6 months. Whether that is totally contributable to the steno is not really known, but it's a possibility.

Hi,
I have cultured stenotrophomonas maltophilia also, in addition to staph, pseudomonas, aspergillus and mycobacterium abcessus. The m. abscessus was a significant problem in the past and I received many months of iv abx for it. Luckily I haven't cultured it for a few years. Right now I am only culturing the stenotrophomonas and it seems to be the thing that is causing me problems with slowly declining pfts (2%/year- Fev1~50%). It, unfortunately, is resistant to all but a couple abx. All things considered, I am doing pretty well. I am able to exercise and am fairly active for an 'old' person!
