What is the age for a vest or acapella?

Our daughter Rachel is 19 months old and currently she is doing the eflow (with albuterol 2x pulmizyme once daily) and manual cpt 2x daily while she is well. However, the compliance issue has become a definate battle as of late. I know she is just being a normal kido, but it has been really challenging. Anyway, I was also wonderging at what age the vest is even a thought? Our dr's make is sound like it is still several years away, but after reading some of the posts it sounds like kids under the age of 5 have a vest. Just curious. Also if anyone has information on the acapella or an age for that I would be interested in hearing that too. Thank you.

Vest depends upon the child's size and they have to be at least 1 year old. Spoke to a mom of a 14 month-old, whose son has the vest and a friend of mine's granddaughter got hers at 18 months. DS didn't get his until he turned 3 -- just the way his doctor does things.

1 year is definitely old enough.

contact www.respirtech.com if you want to get their opinion on the age that they think is appropriate

Eli got his vest at about 15 months. I agree with the post about repirtech. They can give you a vest for even an 18 inch chest. Just get a prescription from your doctor.

The last clinic we went to said around age 2. The clinic we go to now says around age 3. I don't know when they start thinking about the acapella or things like that, maybe 5? They involve controlled breathing right?

I had a lot of issues with Vincent and CPT at around the same age. It was awful and he actually was bruising my thighs by fighting me. Don't worry, it's probably a phase and it will pass!

We just make sure there's something to keep him entertained, like cartoons or a movie. I was trying to go for too long, our clinic says 15 min. is enough. Try for when Rachel is tired, maybe if you're lucky it will put het to sleep. Our clinic also gave us some pinwheels for Vinny to blow on, use those lungs. Other people on here have whistles, or a harmonica, or bubbles.

Sorry to ramble on, I didn't actually answer your question, did I? i hope this might help a little though. Just remember when she's screaming and squirming that she will grow out of it!

Avery got on the Vest at 19 months (1 month after being dx), and she has been doing the acapella since she was a little over 2 (roughly). She has been a dream to work with, we dont let her being a age decide if we try new things on her. We showed her how to swollow enzymes whole, then gave them to her and she did it. So dont think that because of age that these little ones are not resilient because you will be surprised at what they can do it you challenge them.

I'm surprised that they can use the Acapella at age 2. I assumed the breathing techniques would require an older child. Glad it worked for your child.

When Josh was little and had been hospitalized for a bad bronchial infection, the respiratory therapist used a cup in their hands. It was made from rubber and was light blue. They than taped it to tongue depressors for me to use at home...they said it was better than chest clapping because it was smaller and wouldn't sting as much. Hey that was at least 11 years ago.
