hi again everyone, i want to thank you all for your responses to my
first post. i have a question for everyone. my daughter has
developed her first cold today and is coughing a lot. when she
sleeps, she has a really bad rattle in her lungs already and it
sounds like she is snoring. all her doctors told me to do was to
give her these saline nasal drops to help clear up her nose. if
anyone else has any other suggestions as to what can help her feel
a little more comfortable please let me know. thanks again.
By "all her doctors" do you mean pediatricians or cf doctors? With any sort of cold that involves coughing and such, I call the cf docs, not the pedi. If they haven't actually seen her, insist that they do. I don't like the sound of a really bad rattle in the lungs. If they've seen her and prescribed nasal drops to clear up her nose, maybe they don't think its in the lungs (the rattle) but in the nose or back of the throat? Not too long ago my son was making a rattling sound I swore was from his lungs. The doc said it sounded to her more like it was in her nose and throat, like a post-nasal drip sort of thing. They said that was what was causing the cough too. But my son wasn't cranky or uncomfortable, so I'm not sure what to do to comfort her. He was his usual self, just coughing more. Do you think she's uncomfy or in pain? Maybe baby tylenol if so? Popsicles to soothe a sore throat from coughing? And lots of snuggling with mommy

I'll second the advice to call the CF doctor.

My son's CF doctor tells us to do the following when a cold pops up: extra albuterol doses and CPT; steambaths sometimes (run the shower to fill the bathroom w/steam); nasal saline sometimes; antibiotics sometimes. We automatically do these except for the antibiotics, which we call about.
