What was your experience trying to get pregnant?

Hi Cindy, My cervical mucus was thick. OBGYN's have always commented on it through the years. In fact sometimes before my annual pap they have to 'clear it out' in order to get a good smear.

On day 21 of my cycle I would pass a rubber cement ball. So much for egg white consistancy, eh? I guess my dh has agressive swimmers or it was a miracle. Well really either way it was a miracle. It couldn't of happened at a better time. Since his birth I have declined, while my pfts are the same, I struggle to stay as well. I attribute this not only to having an child who gets me sick and all that goes with being a mom who gives 200%. But the big thing is I now culture MRSA which has been very difficult on my health. Even though I'm convinced I picked it up in labor and delivery. I'm sure my lungs were especially susceptible to MRSA and it was just a matter of time for me to get it.

Please excuse the horrible sentance structure. I just read my post and am too lazy to fix it!

I took mucinex to help thin the cervical mucous. We were trying for 5 months and then became pregnant. No fertility drugs luckily. I ended up in the hospital at 6 months due to my Cf and had to have a tune up. I would make sure your as healthy as can be going into it. I went into labor at 39 weeks. The toughest for me was afterward, having a new baby that doesnt sleep normal hours and then still having to take care of your self. Make sure you have a good support system to help you and your husband. Having a baby is such a miracle from god. Good Luck!

Even though I had been off of bc for over two years, if you subtract all the times my husband and I had to STOP ttc because of antibiotics/hospitalizations/surgeries, we prob tried for a year. We had decided to peruse IUI and during the infertility testing they found that one of my fallopian tubes was blocked and cleared it. I was scheduled for my first IUI, but actually (and luckily) conceived naturally before I even got to the IUI!! And without taking any mucus thinners either! Mentally I had relaxed and stopped thinking about it b/c I was focused on the future IUI...maybe that helped?

Throughout this process I became an expert on my own cervical mucus. And it got ridiculously thick around ovulation. So, I tried having sex on the first day I noticed it starting to thicken and it worked! Sorry if that's TMI, but if it worked for me it may work for someone else

It took us a total of 15 months - We tried on our own 8 months. I was ovulating fine, but my cervical mucus supposedly was making it hard to get pregnant. So we did 2 IUIs w/out fertility meds. Neither worked, so we added clomid to the IUIs. I got pregnant that cycle, but had an early miscarriage. We tried on our own one cycle and then I went back on clomid. We missed the timing with the IUIs for two clomid cycles but still tried on our own. Then we got the timing right and did another IUI+clomid and I got pregnant with my daughter.

Although it was theorized that my cervical mucus was preventing me from getting pregnant, no one ever really examined my cervical mucus. I think the doctors just figured that was the case because I had CF. However, I don't understand why the natural IUIs didn't work and the clomid ones did if all we needed to do was get past the cervical mucus...so I may have had something else going on too.

It's so interesting that you wrote this now. My hubby and I have been going for fertility treatment for over half a year now (feels like forever though). We're married for over 2 years and I can't really say that we've been ttc'ing all that time but, putting it all together, it's been over 18 months worth that we've been trying to become pregnant.

That being said, I also ovulate naturally but after some time we presumed my cervical mucus was the issue (everything else was ruled out after I had a uterine polyp removed) and my doctor agreed with our theory. We then also did 2 non-medicated IUIs but they weren't successful. So my doctor put me on clomid. Unfortunately for me, I had two radically different responses to the dosages for the two cycles I took it, so both cycles got abruptly canceled as a result (argh!). This cycle we were supposed to try a different dosage of clomid again but things didn't work out with scheduling. Very frustrating. Point is though, I'm beginning to wonder if cervical mucus is really our issue (I get the egg white stuff around ovulation) because then why didn't any of the IUIs work? We also began thinking it's something else, with current theory being that my late ovulation makes my follies so super-sized (anywhere from 26 to 35 mm) and my uterine lining so thick (usually 15-16 mm), that it's virtually impossible for a fertilized egg to implant. My doctor still believes it's my cervical mucus even though it too wasn't tested. Sigh. Who knows.

Really pleased for you though that things finally worked out and that you're a proud mom already. Your picture's great btw!

Good luck to everyone trying!

How long did it take you to get pregnant?
2 years 2 months

Were you actively trying to get pregnant? The first 7 months we were not actively trying (no BBT, OPKs), just excited/scared and having fun with the whole idea. After the 7th month, I was paying A LOT of attention to things (BBT, OPKs, and timing of things).

Did you have a gyn exam to see how thick your cervical mucus was?
No formal test of cervical mucus w/ sperm though I was routinely told that I have thicker mucus.

Did you have to have any fertility treatments? If so, what?

We started seeing a reproductive endocrinologist (fertility dr.) after we were going into month 11. We went through the typical assessments for DH and I (sperm analysis, tube check, uterus check, medical history, blood work, etc). We were labeled as 'unexplained infertility'.

We tried 3 IUI's (a.k.a. artificial insemination) medicated with femara with no luck.
We then convinced dr. to prescribe me progesterone supplements b/c I spot A LOT post-ovulation.

Tried IUI #4 w/ femara & progesterone with no luck.
Convinced dr. to allow one more IUI cycle w/ Progesterone before we had to move to IVF.

IUI #5 w/ femara, second w/ progesterone = Blessed with a pregnancy. We are now into our sixth month and everything is going well. Baby is due 2/14/2011.

TTC is very difficult & draining if it doesn't happen fairly readily. It is a very hard path, and I think sometimes the CF made it even more so (i.e. feeling bad about infertility and then worse about having CF & unexplained infertility).

We did have my husband tested as a carrier about 4 years before we started trying. He was negative though we can never be fully sure until baby can be tested.

Best to you,
Christina
