Tylenol PM usually does the trick for me when I choose to take it. I normally take only 1 about 30 min or so before I am wanting to go to bed. If I know I will be able to sleep over 8 hrs I will take 2 Tylenol PM.
I haven't ever really taken anything else as a sleep aid, so I can't comment on anything else.

Relax. Calm down. Stop thinking (just go into DUH mode). Make sure you are laying in bed and watching some extremely boring TV programming, either c-span or religious programming works great for me. Go to sleep.

Haha i think this 'Duh mode' you speak of is what most americans live in most the whole time see as who is your president hahahah. But seriously what if one cannot seem to calm down, will you have a more potent remedy? I have heard of something melatonin, or perhaps valerian which doesn't seem to be strong enough. As i recall ambien will make yyou see mirage no? hallucinate?

What about a nice tall glass of warm gin? Always puts me to sleep!
For those of you who find it offensive, unhealthy or just plain wrong to use gin to fall asleep I guess I see your point....rum works just as well! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

On occasion I would have some trouble throughout my childhood. I would suggest you read some tips on sleep. It is best to not get into bed unless you are sleepy. Try keeping your eyes open and look around the room until you feel your eyes fallen off to sleepy land. Sometimes watching a good movie helps to relax you. Avoid sugary foods after five PM and if you have any sugar cravings just have fruit as this is high in tryptophan (amino acid) Try to keep exercise early in the day. The only exercise that I can do is bounce gently on the trampoline with your feet not jumping off the mat. THis is really not exercise but it helps to relax you. I do it for ten minutes before bedtime and since I have this mini trampoline, I hit the hay very quickly.

IF you tend to worry a lot write your thoughts down before bedtime so there is no excuse to think anymore. Learning how to sleep is a process so try not to be hard on yourself. Try not to try to sleep. Some people close their eyes and hope for the best. Try not to worry that you are not sleeping or that you have to sleep. LEt your body relax and do its natural course.

IF you do not exercise it might be a good time to start as many people who exercise sleep really well. I would try different natural methods before taking sleeping pills.

BEst of success,

I have NO problem getting to sleep. Its staying asleep or getting quality sleep that is my problem. I dont think any med can fix that unless I am away from my home without animals, kids & hubby. Even then I would have to leave my bladder & cough behind as well.

Be careful taking Tylenol PM. Our CF nurse told me that it is not good for respirtory problems. Please check with your CF doc before you take it. I take Ambien - but only sometimes when I have not slept for a few nights.

Hi,

I have alot of trouble sleeping too. I take a natural supplement called Seredyn. You can get it online through their website. It is basically an herb called Valerian, combined with Hibiscus flower. Like most sleeping/calming aids I'm sure you have to take it in moderation. Though I'm sure it's better than taking any drug. I take it as needed, 1 capsule, and it kicks in within 20 mins. But, I wake up feeling good, no grogginess. I love it! It's very calming.
I think it's more for people that are tense, anxious, toss and turn types. Not at all for pain, or coughing.

It works good, and is relatively safe.
