Been there, done that!! I graduated from university last year, so I definately know how you feel. The worst is having a coughing fit in a class of 200 hundred people! My strategy has always been to bring lots of water with me which always helps drown the fits. I also find chewing gum helps (maybe due to more saliva production so your throat doesn't dry out). And of course, waiting until the opportune moment to do your coughing (ie - in church I used try to wait until the times when everyone had to stand up or sit down because all of the shuffling helps drown out the coughing). In class, it's a bit more difficult though. Whenever I felt a big coughing fit coming on, I would sneak off into the hall or bathroom, so I wouldn't annoy anyone. Strategic seating locations are therefore also very helpful. I would always try to sit at the back (providing there was a door at the back of the class) and also in the aisle seats, so I wouldn't be stepping over everyone trying to get out. The worst of course was during exams. I used to be more worried about making a scene than I was about passing!!! I found though, that once the class sizes got smaller, people were more understanding. They learn to realize that you can't help it, and they are much more considerate. I remember in high school, I used to get to write my tests and exams in a separate room because of my coughing! Ah, the good old days when I was actually able to focus on my grades, rather than on how many people were giving me the eye roll!! Seriously though, there will always be bad experiences and people who will make the experiences bad, and if someone is really hassling you, just look them in the eye and say "This is alot harder on me than it is on you, so give me a break."
