HI DAVE
I am the mother of a 17 year old girl we didnt know until about 5 months ago that she had CF. She has been in the same school system in georgia all her life in high school she had more than one teacher that kept putting her out in the hall in a desk to do her work. At the time we thought she had asthma only. I always sent her inhaler and cough drops to school with her and spoke with the teachers and school nurse and social worker many Times to no avail. She was pointed at and called a trouble maker for being put in the hall. I have since pulled her out of school and she is working on her GED. Well it does happen I wish people were more understanding. Thanks for listening DEBRA MOTHER OF TINA

My doctor used to be on a big kick abouot breathing/coughing techniques (how to breathe and inhale properly to increase the amount of air in the lungs so that your forced coughs produce more mucus, etc)...and one of his was called the "echo cough"...so that when someone else coughed in the classroom I would try and do the same..more coughs lead to less mucus in the lungs was the theory.
I would think my doctor wouldn't care for this teacher!
Sorry...bit off the topic which you posted...just reminded me of that is all.

Been there, done that!! I graduated from university last year, so I definately know how you feel. The worst is having a coughing fit in a class of 200 hundred people! My strategy has always been to bring lots of water with me which always helps drown the fits. I also find chewing gum helps (maybe due to more saliva production so your throat doesn't dry out). And of course, waiting until the opportune moment to do your coughing (ie - in church I used try to wait until the times when everyone had to stand up or sit down because all of the shuffling helps drown out the coughing). In class, it's a bit more difficult though. Whenever I felt a big coughing fit coming on, I would sneak off into the hall or bathroom, so I wouldn't annoy anyone. Strategic seating locations are therefore also very helpful. I would always try to sit at the back (providing there was a door at the back of the class) and also in the aisle seats, so I wouldn't be stepping over everyone trying to get out. The worst of course was during exams. I used to be more worried about making a scene than I was about passing!!! I found though, that once the class sizes got smaller, people were more understanding. They learn to realize that you can't help it, and they are much more considerate. I remember in high school, I used to get to write my tests and exams in a separate room because of my coughing! Ah, the good old days when I was actually able to focus on my grades, rather than on how many people were giving me the eye roll!! Seriously though, there will always be bad experiences and people who will make the experiences bad, and if someone is really hassling you, just look them in the eye and say "This is alot harder on me than it is on you, so give me a break."

I coughed all the way through King Kong and that was a long movie.... I started trying to time for scenes with lots of crashing and female shrieking.

I realize that's not really related to the school thing, but you know, timing, for thought etc. It's a balance between the fact that you need to cough, and you can't always leave the room becasue you'll miss too much and the fact that it is disruptive/annoying to others. I think most of us know oursleves well enough to sort of gage if it's going to be a - long dramatic...dear lord look how purple her face is getting..spell of hacking, or just - a common little CF signature coughing spell. I try to act according to cough and common sense.

Well I am in that situation now sort of... For the past few years I have been in lecture with about 120 people.. I sit front row and center and always have... In class when I cough, I do" fake body seizures" or as I sometimes call it the silent cough.. my whole body shakes and my brains feel like they are going to pop...well that is what I look like.. cause I hold it in as best as I can till the teacher is done making a point...when she or he pauses, I do a deep breath..and try to move things around...

Everyone hates it when I cough in class, and I totally understand why, I hate it when someone coughs, the lecture is so intense that you hang on their every word..and it is annoying when you can't hear it.. I also drink soda...in class the bubbles seem to help... Also my entire class has been in class with me for three years so they know me.....I leave if I feel a coughing fit comming on... I don't think it is my right to sit in class in hack my way though..while ppl are trying to hear....

No one has ever asked me to leave, because I do it on my own...in the least distracting way as possible....

The only other place I go with big groups is church...My closest friends inare there..and I don't even think they hear me cough anymore..since I do it so often..and they just know I am not sick but that it is normal..but not everyone in my church knows I have CF, we have a lot of visitors or newer ppl and there and it has never been said to everyone that I Have CF so many ppl still don't know..and they just think I am sick all the time, they always ask me if I am okay??? So sweet..but so tiring.. Sometimes like last week my friends that I am with will say SHES FINEEEEEEEE I also don't sit by ppl I don't know..because my cough has a dry hack to it most of the time and I sound horrible... No one that doesn't know that I am not contagious would want to be around me....Can you imagine having a little baby in your arms sitting in front of me hearing me.. ???? It is my choice to do that, I could explain, but I prefer to be overcareful and not make anyone uncomfortable...

I also if I am having a bad coughing fit will walk out into the bathroom when at church..no one but me really cares.... but I still do it..

I've always been really open about what's going on with me, always told my profs up front, and people rarely give me a hard time. I do occasionally excuse myself if I think it's a little out of hand. It is important to be sensitive to others, even though WE are the ones having to deal with it. Try not to get too fired up about it.
