What's an "RT"?

There is an RT we see at every one of Emily's clinic visits. We love her. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

She taught us how to do cpt and how to use the acapella when Emily was dx'ed, does the pft's at all clinic appts, is good at working with Emily, and seems pretty knowledgeable about cf.

eta> I am not sure who'd we see or what the protocol would be if Emily was admitted. I am totally grossed out by some of what I see posted here re. how their nebs are done, etc. I'll be bringing our sterilizer with us when Emily gets admitted just in case!

I have to say the RT's at MUSC are the one's who spend the most time with CFers. They come in your room, they work so hard on finding a schedule that will allow you to get all your treatments in and yet work with your time frame of things.

To say they are anything less then chock full of knowledge about CF would be insane.

I am sorry to the person who has not had a good experience with their RT but don't trash them or call them unknowledgeable because of your experience.

I guess I am a bit defensive about them since they work so hard. My experience has been they stay with me the whole time I am doing my treatments which we all know can take well over an hour at a time, they cheered me on, talked to me and let me babel about when I am on high doses of steroids and feeling insane.

As we all know being in the hospital is the pits and it really affects are moods, many times we take it on our caretakers and RT's are often the brunt of our frustration or can be anyway.

Of course I am not dumb and I know that not all RT's are created equal, just like not all nurses and doctors are either... I just wanted to say that I personally know many RTs who put their whole hearts into CF. WHo do research, who help train others and who spend their precious time away from their familes going to conferences and learning all they can about CF. They are so personally involved and often take home patients with them in their hearts.

Just wanted to add my two cents for what it is worth.

Just a thought and my experience.
The RT's have always been wonderful and very knowledgeable when Makailyn is on the CF Floor.

But,,,,, there have been times that there were no rooms on the CF floor and we might of ended up on the Kindney floor or GI floor. I will tell you there was not one RT on the other 2 floors that knew a thing about CF other than ,they need to have breathing treatments. Which we would have to tell them what to do ,and even had to ask them to wash their hands when they entered the room.

I think it's like most things in the medical field, it's like if you are an RN and you are mostly in the ER, you may know a lot about emergency care, but little about or nothing about CF. Or if your a Family Practice doctor, you might know some about CF and you might know nothing about CF other than it's a complex lung disease ,and they will not touch you.

I don't think anyone's trying to be cruel to RT's . It's just that, what field of specialty does an RT want to be a part of ....... If you catch yourself with an RT that might not be doing something quite right, be thankful that you have learned what is right and you can help them learn more about CF.

We ,as in all , doctors, nurse's , RT 's,are still learning every day something about CF. We have a long ways to go. I do believe this web site may make a big difference , because we can talk to people all over the world and discuss what you and your loved ones are going through , and we can bring what we learn to the doctors. Hopefully they are willing to take the time to learn . That's all we've got,,,,,,, is to learn from each of our experience's and pray for more doctors and nurse's to learn about this disease....I am truely, thankful for the one's that do spend their life learning and caring about this disease!!!!! We need all the help that we can get........

Bless everyone,,,,,,,,Karla <img src="i/expressions/heart.gif" border="0">
