"What's CF??"

I was diagnosed 6 years ago but even now that I've gotten comfortable talking about CF, I still don't have a comfortable way of describing it. It feels so unnatural for me to describe the illness because I feel like I'm using other people's words (namely, doctors'), and it comes out as a bunch of mumbo jumbo. So, please tell me! How do you describe CF to others??

I think CFF.org has a reasonably easy answer (like on the back of the great strides brochure) You can also try doing a search on here.. Hope this helped joni

The bare bones answer: I usually just say that it's a health condition in which your lungs can't clean themselves, and so the result is sticky mucus that stays in there and has to be coughed out. The mucus issue also affects our pancreas so we have to take pills to digest our food. I usually stop there

I agree with welshwitch. i also keep it simple and put it in simple terms for the non medical people. i also encourage people to ask me questions that they have of my condition. I also highlight the advancements science has made. for example, the doctors told my parents that i would only live to i was 13. this happened in 1978. now, i am 33. i am living almost 3 times my life span due to advancements!!
