When is a Port suggested?

So sometimes they are given when you have a hard time getting a PICC even if you only get one once a year? It seems like every time I am given a PICC they have to try both arms and several veins because they get it in and then as they push it further in, it goes off into some little vein that ends. Anyway, it is definitely not a 15 min procedure for me. It is the IV team that puts it in and they do the ultrasound thing. Anyway, just curious.

My doc suggested a port when I was going on IV meds more often and I had had 2 picc lines and both of them were either infected or clotted within a couple of days of having them. I had my first one for about 5 years and my second one for a little over a year. I had the second one removed after transplant and I didn't need it anymore.

My doctor recommended a port when the inconvenience of coming in for a PICC placement began to interfer with starting IVs quickly. Additionally, I have needed IVs 4 times this year alone. I have had it in for 1 month and I am very happy with my decision. Incidently, I don't stay over night for PICC placements nor did I have to for the port placement. Now I don't have to go to the hospital at all to start IVs.
