When is it time?

In my personal experience, I wouldn't quote it as "I was about to die" My mind doesn't THINK in that way. I would say something like "becoming physically & mentally weaker" I didn't see myself as "dying" I was very sick. Very sick & dying is two different things. (to me anyways) Very sick in my opinion was...
-Wearing oxygen 24/7 at 2.5 liters
-continuos I.V antibiotics for 3 years
-Doing 3 or more breathing treatments a day
-Not being able to walk across the room without getting majorly short of breath
-Needing a wheelchair in public places such as the mall & park
-Not going to school and hanging out with friends
-Before Transplant my FEV1 was stable in the low 20's eventually low as 18%
- I was listed for 2.5 years before I got the call

I'm sure there are many other little things that I'm forgetting but it's been so long now that I can't even remember all the suffering anymore. Not that I want to remember it. More to the point, I went through sooo much, I don't remember it all.

Wow, I didn't think some people would get so upset. Sorry for the craziness. Thank you everyone for your responses, I apprecite it. To clear some things up, I don't think I am "giving up". I don't know my exact FEV1 because it changes but it is usually in the 20's. I'm still doing all of my treatments and eating as much as I can. I'm only tired and curious. Tom- everything you've said is very well worded and kind so thank you. LDude916- Pulmonary rehab sounds like a great idea, thank you <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> I'll look into that.

Hmm, I don't think there's a simple answer to this anywhere. There are too many inconsistencies. Like some of the others who work in medicine, I have seen my share of people die. Some seemed to know. That "feeling of impending doom" that we are taught in school is something that, I too, took seriously (forewarned is forearmed right?). Others are clearly not prepared and fight until their illness or injury overcomes their bodies' ability to compensate. Still others who had every intention of dying (suicide) seemed to linger on despite serious injury. Finally, some seem to accept death and pass very gracefully.

Will you know when it's time? Maybe.
If you accept death or give up hope will you die? Not necessarily.
If you fight it with everything you have will you live? Not necessarily.
Is it good to be prepared with an end of life care plan and/or DNR? Absolutely.

With certain issues there is no right or wrong answer if you look at it from a personal point of view. MY thoughts are simply based on what I've already been through.
