My husband lost his job over a year ago. Our schools are horrible esp with one of my kids has an extensive IEP. I would like to move right outside of a big city w/ a good school system and a great CF Center. Two of my four kids have CF, they also need good endocrinology, ophthalmology, and ENT on top of the pulmonary care. Where is the top hospitals, cf center and schools all in one. I know I want it all, or at least I am going to try. Thanks. Currently we are in Melbourne, FL. Willing to go anywhere for a better life for my kids.

There are good cf centers and doctors in every part of the country. Personally, I would stay near the ocean/beach, the salt air is great. I would avoid cities with lots of air pollution. It is nice to be within 30 minutes of your center/hospital. It is also good to be within an hour of a good lung transplant hospital. If the time comes, you don't need to do any relocation.

You can look here to get some ideas for the better rated hospitals.

Hi there! We live in a quaint, on the water, low crime, town named St. Mary's, Ga. It is right on the Ga./Fl. border. We go to the CFF accredited clinic at Nemours, in Jacksonville, Fl. They are terrific! In the Nemours building there is every type of specialist your cf'er would need. It takes us about 45 minutes to get to clinic. The schools in our county (Camden County, Ga.) were rated by Newsweek magazine this past summer as being in the top 6% of all schools in the NATION. I have one child in the public school system....I home school the rest.
Also fyi....my 26 year old daughter lives in Melbourne! If you ever need help with hiring a babysitter that would know all about cf...she's your girl...she helped me tremendously with her little sister, Zoe.
Take care!

I would start here: Care Center Data (you'll need to quickly register on the site if you never have before) and take a look through the statistics of various clinics to get a jumping off point; you'll get an idea of where the centers with top numbers are located and then can take it from there... investigating schools, cost of living/jobs in each area, etc.

If you will be truly starting over, I'd take the time to find a truly top-notch center and there are a handful that really stand out from the rest as reflected by the health of the children under their care. As the centers are pretty much always part of a Children's hospital- if you find a center you are interested in relocating to, I would call them and ask about the other depts of the hospital and get a feel for how things are and/or find the website for the hospital and check things out.

In our case, we go to CCMC (ped side of the Central CT CF Center) and couldn't be happier w/ Emily's care. We've needed to use several other depts of the hospital and been happy with all but one dr we have seen there and the depts work well together in providing good care. My daughter is in special education with an extensive iep and we live in a small town that has an excellent school system about an hour away from our center (more than worth the trip.)

I wish the best. Job loss and school troubles are very hard circumstances to cope with!
