While driving in my car last night...

It was raining on my way home from my Iaido class, and it was the first time after class I had actually enjoyed the practice. Perhaps, the main reason was because I was actually complimented from my three master instructors that they had confidence in me doing ok for my fifth dan test (Yes, 5th Dan), and that my knees only started hurting after class, not during.
On the way home, the rain was pouring, and some idea went into my head about a topic, but like all topics I think of to place on this forum, it had vanished.
I could only think of how my ability to drive in Japan would differ from those who drive in the States. First, although I drive a stick-shift (manual transmission), I shift left handed, not right, because I am on the right hand side of the car, and drivng on the left- the opposite for the States.
Also, I realized because the streets are so narrow, that often times I am sharing a lane with another car, because someone in his lane had illegally parked on the side of the road, or there is no extra space for a left (or right) turn, and the cars going through has to merge into the existing lane in order for traffic to continue.
I had come across a point while coming home, when one car had stopped to make a right turn (equal to a left in the States, because they have to wait for oncoming traffic), and ended up stopping me, and the cars in the lane next to me because of the narrow road.
I also started to realize how fast people in the States really drive! When you think going 60, or 80 is fast, try comparing the value to kilometers and miles! 60 miles per hour would equall 100 kilometers, but the maximum speed on the freeway is only 80 kilometers here!! My last visit to the states, I think I noticed the maximum speed was up to 75 m.p.h., but that would be nearly 120 km/h, and I think Japan is too small and too crowded of a country to allow a speed that high!
I often wonder how anyone can really learn to drive in Japan, with the way some of them lack so much courtesy, and common sense. A car would abruptly stop in front of you, just to let someone else in, yet they never consider they are indangering themselves from a rear-end collision! People riding motorcycles in the rain are the worst! One false mistake in breaking, speed, or hitting a puddle, and they are a hazzard to those traveling behind them!
Anyway, I also was feeling nostalgic, while listening to my Pat Benatar music, how pleasant it really was to go back to personal transportation, rather than public transportation. I enjoy driving in the rain, if it's not a deadly heavy poor. When the wife and I went on our trip last weekend, it was a bit rough weather, but that kept me awake all the way.
On the contrary, I was thinking with how hazzardous the driving is in Japan, always watching in front, behind, and even the sides (to avoid losing your side mirrors from a car coming too close), I thought it would turn me into an excellent driver when I return to the states! It already paid off when I went with my wife to San Francisco! We were in a big Buick, and during rush hour, there was a lot of cars, and busses to be aware of. I was able to navigate through that without a scratch, just had to wipe the profuse sweat from my hands off the steering wheel at every stop light!
Added:
Well, as I was vacuuming my car, I finally recalled what the other thought I had. I was too tired to change from my Iaido Uniform into civilian clothes, and wore my sandals, too. I decided to go home as is, and as i slipped my sandals off, I could go back to relaxing as I drive, because I realized after several times of driving barefoot, started to like it. My thought was to ask who else drives barefoot.
I'm even using the "Add Poll" feature to see how convenient this works!
Keep on Truckin'!

Dude, did you just rate your own topic? Lame! =-)

Anyway, i used to drive barefoot when I had a car. I actually remember hearing something about how it's actually illegal to drive barefoot in some states, but I don't know if that's actually true.

No Mockingbird, I did not rate my own topic! Excuse me for being human and erroring! (And I'm surprised by your comment of calling me lame!)
I seemingly misunderstood the "Add Poll" function, I thought it was for others to answer the question, and just give info on it, like a questionare. What's wrong with doing something like seeing feedback to how a particular question is answered, anyway?
And, not being aware that driving barefoot is illegal in most states, I kind of question the reasons...sometimes certain shoes can be more of an inhibitor to control the pedals, than bare feet.
But, if people don't know if it's illegal in their state, that brings up an important point to know the laws in your own state.

I've heard driving barefoot is illegal in North Carolina, however I dont know for sure. But I do see people driving with one barefoot hanging out the window (and yes this would be the driver of the vehicle doing this)...and I'm pretty sure that is illegal too.

Fred, I was joking about you being lame... not sure if you realized that.

On another forum there is a game where we accuse each other of rating our own topics, then give low ratings and stuff. (Or give high ratings to someone and falsely accuse that person of rating his own topic. =-)

Sorry, Mockingbird, didn't realize that...
Apparently, I wasn't there for that "inside joke" about the "self-rating".
I hadn't been on here as much as I used to and I also rarely see you here, so I wondered if you are aware of the "atmosphere" of this forum, lately. After what I've seen so far these days, it seems difficult to figure out if some people are really joking, or are outright cruel. I've seen too many cruel comments (some of which have been deleted) to feel at ease these days.
I thought you might have been joking, but maybe the other fear was that someone would agree with your comment, and them NOT joking.
Anyway, thanks for adding the comment...maybe I should have thought off the bat you were kidding, because you did answer the question.
Of course, I should also listen to my own advice, and double check that driving barefoot in Japan is ok...they do everything else barefoot, still!! Walking in the house, just wearing slippers, sometimes, and of course for my Iaido and the other martial arts I did...
Regards,
Fred

I actually found a site about this. It says that it is an urban myth and that driving barefoot is actually leagal in all states except Kentuky.

<a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://tafkac.org/legal/driving.barefoot/driving_barefoot.html">http://tafkac.org/legal/drivin.../driving_barefoot.html</a>

Also, on a Wikipedia article, I found that it is illegal to drive barefoot or to drive wearing sandals in Hong Kong.

<a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barefoot">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barefoot</a>

It says, <div class="FTQUOTE"><begin quote> if a sudden stop is necessary and there is anything such as gravel or glass embedded in the brake pedal, the leg's reflexes may cause the foot to withdraw from the pedal, resulting in an increased stopping time.</end quote></div><img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif" border="0">

That's the only reason I could find. Now that really is lame!

That is Lame! You figure most people in Hong Kong WEAR sandals, right?
must be dangerous just to walk there!
Any idea with why only Kentucky is illegal? hopefully not because everyone is barefoot?
I could see the only reason to make driving barefoot illegal is if no one brings an extra pair of shoes, and if they had to exit the vehicle on rocks, glass, etc., that would be dangerous.
Thanks for doing a search on that, Mockingbird! (I got side-tracked and forgot to!)
As for "HairGirls" low rating, maybe your info will help bring up the ratings, again!

Ha ha, I actually used to belong to the "National Barefooters Society" at one time. It turned out to just be a bunch of people whining about getting kicked out of retaurants and stuff for being barefoot.

Aslo, there was one time on a really hot day I took a walk to the mailbox which was wayyyy down the street. I got about half-way there and I realized the black asphalt on the street was so hot it was burning my feet! It was so bad I got huge blisters all over the bottoms of my feet and I had to walk funny for a while. The really bad part is a few months later I did it again! Then after that a third time. My only defense is I was a teenager at the time so i wasn't very smart. (Now I'm just not very smart. =-)
