Who decides Port or PICC?

We got Garran's Port placed last October, He was almost 6 at that time. He had had a number of PICC lines and his veins were getting weaker and it was getting harder to find a good line to put the PICC in. So we opted for the Port. Now we do the IV Antibiotics every 2 months and it has helped him quite a bit.

As for Contact sports the Port will prohibit it a bit because of the chance that it could get hit and damaged. it takes alot of punch for it to be damaged but some sports can be pretty rough. IE. Martial Arts, Football, Soccer....You get my drift. So we are currently looking for something that Garran can do this coming year to stay in shape and get some good exercise. We are thinking maybe swimming if he likes it.

Anyway, it is something to think about, we really like the fact that he has the Port, and he is thrilled not to be poked so many times every time he goes into the hospital, one stick in the port and thats it.

He does have to have it flushed with heparin every month but that is not a big deal to him and if your son doesnt like needles, they can give you some creme to numb the site before they access the port so he wont feel anything.

Oh another good thing about the port is that most times if he does gets sick we can just call the Doc and he can order some IV antibiotics and have them delivered and have his port accessed and we just add extra vest and nebs at home, so less hospital stays.

When not accessed the port is under the skin and he can do everything, but when it gets accessed he has to be careful and not take showers with it etc...

I know nothing about Ports or PICCS, but, since Emily's veins roll and every blood draw and IV expereince to date has been SO terrible, I'm guessing that next time the need arises, we'll do a PICC. For my future reference, could somone please describe the prodedure incolved in accessing a port? If it's under the skin, how is it accessed? Sorry it that's a silly question, but, like I said, I know nothing!

What it is is a small cylindar disc about the size of a quarter and about a quarter inch thick under the skin and has a type of baloon thingy in it, kink of like those stress balls that you squeese that re form after you squeeze them, after you poke it it reforms itself around the hole so that you can keep poking holes in the port with out damaging it. at the at the bottom is a line that goes throuth the vein like a PICC and directly to the heart. When you access the port you use a butterfly type straight angled needle and its similar to a PICC but less poking.

here is a link where you can see a picture of a port a cath
