Whooping Cough

Good Morning everyone I hope everyone is doing fairly well. I want to pick your brain for a few min. Ashton has a child in the same daycare class as him that has Whooping Cough and was in school for 2 days with it in that time she coughed and vomited. i want to know if anyone has delt with whooping cough?? Im going to of course email the CF Center but our family doc said if hes UTD on immunizations not to worry about it, but i believe that the girl that has whooping cough was UTD on her immunizations as well im going to see if i can find that out today. Ashton just yesterday finished his last dose of antibiotic for strep which was augmentin so his immune system was a little lower in the first place but they also say that augmentin wont cover whooping cough! Just let me know what everyone thinks! this is the last thing that i want to have to deal with! Thanks in advance


Well i thought we were doing pretty good then the last 2 nights ashton has started coughing. Hopefully it dosent turn into anything worse as we are supposed to go out of town this weekend. If he continues to cough tonight and or starts coughing during the day im gonna call the clinic and see what they think on monday they told me just to watch him for SX of whooping cough so we will see. talk to everyone later!

When Max was about a year old, we had a whooping cough epidemic going around our City and one of his classmates got it. The daycare director called us and all the other parents, as per health department recommendations and all the children were directed to contact their pediatrician and were put on zithromax. The child who'd contracted it was vaccinated for pertussis and still got it.

DS was fine, as were the other kids in his class. I seem to recall there were quite a few adults who'd contracted it at the time. Now there's an adult vaccine, but at the time there wasn't.

Our oldest DS caught whooping cough at 1 yr. It was definitely NOT fun. He was up to date on his immunizations; therefore, he was partially immunized. That was 17 yrs ago and it wasn't common for immunized children to catch it (like it's becoming now). I think that's why it took 2 weeks, 2 ER visits, and several sick visits to get DS diagnosed. The nights were the worst. I slept with him for over a month because the coughing episodes were so scary. DS would actually turn blue! THe cough is very distinctive - it doesn't sound like a cf, croup, or asthma cough. DS has no lasting effects, but he's also not our cf kid - just has asthma. We still have no clue how he caught it - he did not attend daycare and was not around other children much at the time.

Honestly, your DS will probably be fine. I think being on antibiotics may actually help prevent it since that's how DS was treated (erythromycin and a bronchodilator). The chances of your DS catching it are probably low. My two youngest were exposed to chicken pox by their babysitter's daughter. DS was 2 yrs, DD 6 months. DS had recently had the chicken pox vaccine, DD obviously not. Both were sick and on prednisone but neither one caught it!! THe babysitter's DD was really sick, too (she was immunized 2 months prior to catching it.)
