Who's on IVs right now?

Wow! I'm surprised by so many who have the energy to work while on home IVs! This round of meds has taken a lot out of me and there is no way I could work. All I do is go from bed to couch. Good for you for staying active!

a quick question...I know a few of you have mentioned showering with your port access. What are you using to cover it?

luke- when i shower with my port i do one of two things. If I have a large-sized tegaderm I can put gauze over my dressing and just slap the tegaderm over it. It works very well, provided the tegaderm is large enough (the hospital gives me the super big 10 inch by whatever ones) to cover the whole dressing plus at least an inch on all sides. If I don't have any of those, I use a thick plastic ziplock bag (usually the ones my IV supplier sends stuff in, as long as there aren't any holes in it) and cut it to fit. Then I just medical tape the heck out of the edges. It works fairly well most of the time.

What are you on? Aztreonam, cefepime, and meropenum. I do two weeks of each, then switch to the next med. I'm currently doing aztreonam.

How long have you been on it? Since April of last year.

Does it seem to be working? I haven't been in the hospital, so yes.

Have you suffered any side effects, and if so, care to share? When on aztreonam, I'll break out into one hive. Usually one, single hive. How weird is that?

Are you at home or in the hospital? Home! I started constant home IV so I could live a "normal" life again.

juliepie, doesn't amikacin stink?? i got a bit of hearing damage from it. it has the craziest side effects. i was on amikacin and cefepime in october, then i had to go back on it late november. they had to stop the amikacin early because i was getting vertigo and the hearing damage. do you think thats why you got such bad side effects?

krisgabes, I experience ringing in my ears, I need to go for another hearing test in the near future. That's pretty much the only side effect from the amikacin. The tigecycline was awful though! but then again, vertigo sounds just as bad- if not worse- than the nausea! UGH, I can't imagine! I guess that's what happens with the heavy-hitters. Take the good with the bad- at least the amikacin doesn't cause stinky pee! That's an adorable pug in your picture, by the way! Definitely put a smile on my face

I finished mine yesterday. First time in a little over two years. Up until I moved to Australia back in 2003 I did them evey three months, but the climate there did wonders for my CF, and I haven't had as much need for them since. Now that I'm back in Norway I guess I'll eventually have to start doing them more regularly.

What are you on?
Tobramycin and Ceftazidim, and lots of it

How long have you been on it?
Did 12 days, just finished yesterday morning.

Does it seem to be working?
They worked a charm. I wasn't really that sick to begin with, but have been a bit worse than usual the last couple of months, so figured it was time for a tune up.

Have you suffered any side effects, and if so, care to share?
You bet I have. Nothing to drastic. Every time I start treatment I get an extremely irritating itch in the place your not supposed to scratch, at least not in public. Luckily it usually only lasts a few days. It is beyond annoying. I also get really sore around the joints on my fingers, all 12 days, and then some.

Are you at home or in the hospital?

Luckily I do all my IVs at home. The hospital pharmacy mixes all the meds, and I do everything else myself. I use a butterfly and easy-pumps twice a day.

What are you doing while you're on IVs?
While I'm doing them I just try to sit as still as possible while I watch tv. The rest of the time I do my usual routine (work, sleep, eat, work, sleep, eat... And play a lot of Xbox 360)
