Why do so many Cfers have Reflux?

My daughter has needed Prevacid since birth. She had Meconium Ileus and an adhesion so I think this has damaged something obviously.
I am wondering if reflux is more common in those who have had meconium ileus at birth or if it is just all Cfers.

It is my understanding that it is all CF. My daughter did not have MI but has horrible reflux. Our GI says it is because kids will CF all have motility issues because of the thick mucous in their gut.

Even kids that don't show obvious signs of reflux are placed on something like prevacid when they have CF. Alyssa was put on it when they put her on enzymes, they said that the synergy between the two make the enzymes work better. Later on, when we had a scope done, we learned that she does have significant acid reflux, its just that we didn't see an outward symptoms.

The pancreas doesn't just produce digestive enzymes. It also produces sodium bicarbonate. When this is inhibited due to the damage caused by CF, it can result in a much more acidic environment that affects how well the enzymes work. Meds like Prevacid help restore a better ph balance and address reflux and help the enzymes work better.

Our doctor told us that CFers don't really have reflux and that the only reason they use zantac or prevacid is because it helps the enzymes work better.

I don't know that I necessarily believe that, but that's what he told us the last time we were there.

I have been on antacids/PPI's since I was about 12 years old. In the past, they thought that maybe reflux was due to the downwards positioning of manual CPT. I think it can also be a side effect of enzymes. I also think it can be due to the digestive/pancreatic problems that CFers have as well. So there are many factors as to why we have issues with reflux. The important thing is keeping it under control so that it doesn't affect lung function, since it can cause problems with that if untreated.

My son had meconium ileus at birth also and has acid reflux. I wondered this same thing and asked his care team if he'd out grow the acid reflux....they told me the same as people have said here. The zantac help his enzymes work better so he would be on it whether he had acid reflux or not. Sorry to hear your little one had meconium ileus, a very stressful thing to go through with your new born...i'm sure it was hard. God bless and I hope your sweet baby girl is doing wonderful now! Take good care! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
