Wow, I use cough medicine quite often for nighttime coughing. Is that something I shouldn't be doing?

I don't drink, so I don't really know if alcohol has the same effect, but I imagine that's true.

CF doctors are probably not going to recommend that someone with CF take something that would keep them from coughing, because that would not be conducive to getting up the mucous. I used to use cough medication and have taken a sip of alcohol to stop coughing, but now I mostly rely on Benadryl. Usually my coughing is from post nasal drip though, and Benadryl really helps dry me out. I doubt it would be recommended for lungs either though.

My doc only gave me cough syrup when I was sick and *couldn't* sleep. She said I was absolutely not to take it at any other time; it was only so that I could get rest.

My doctor says the same thing. No cough meds...but I do use them if I cant sleep and he always says thats ok.

I also in college used to put a shot of flavored liquor (this was instead of cough meds) in my tea before bed to help me sleep...ONLY if I was sick and knew I would have trouble sleeping.
