Have they took a sputum culture lately? That should say what bugs you're growing & what oral meds (if any) should work. You don't want to mess around too long, but you could ask them to check your sputum culture & try an oral medication for a couple of weeks, then try the hospitalization if that doesn't seem to be working.
I know what you mean....only 3 months left of school & I'm sure you want to enjoy every minute of it.

You could also do IVs at home. Go in for a few days if they absolutely insist, and do the rest at home. I used to do 3-4 days inpatient and then the other 10-11 at home.

i am really starting to feel that the hospital is sometimes the worst place to be for me, even when i'm sick as all hell. i get no rest, am around a ton more bugs, and generally don't feel better when i leave. i usually don't start feeling better until i am pretty much done with home i.v.'s, which is a week or two after spending 2 weeks in the hospital. i can take better care of myself at home than the nurses do at the hospital. i am thinking that the next time it is time to go in i will see if just a couple days will do, or just get my picc put in in outpatient and head home for the course.

You're 18, you're not a kid. And I started doing home IVs when I was 16. I hate how some hospitals insist you CAN'T do IVs at home, that's crap.

Hi - Jason was 6 when he did his round of home IV's last year. The home health company was very familiar and helpful even for him being so young. He did have to go in for a few days and he did the remainging 2.5 weeks at home. He went to school the entire time; he was late a few days that's all. Hopefully they could work something out with you. Jo Ann - Mom of Jason 8 w/cf

I second the "that's crap" theory. i was doing iv's (Picc then PORT) at home in high school as well.

Unless they don't think you actually DO your PT they should let you.

I agree -- your 18, how can they say you cannot do them at home???? My kids have never had to have IV meds, but the one time we thought it might happen my daughter was 16 years old and the doctor said they would keep her overnight to make sure she didn't have a reaction and then she could do the rest at home.

I say talk to your doctor again and find out if they cannot make an exception for you. Hopefully you will find out that when you press the issue, you get what you want.

Try looking into a home care agency - I think they could do the home IV's and possibly any pt you need. I work for a home care agency and we do alot at home with IV's. It probably depends on insurance also. I'm kinda scared to send my kid to the hospital since reading about cepacia. I have a 9 year old with cf and it scares me if he ever has to go. I would definetly ask about home care!! It's a great service!!

Could it be that certain clinics will let you do home IVs and some don't? I know quite a few LITTLE kids at our clinic do home IV's.

Hopefully they will somehow let you do them from home!

My daughter had her first cf stay last spring. We stayed for 4 days and then they sent us home with a PICC line. She was only 3, but wasn't too sick. Can they add two more therapies with a homehealth nurse? Just wondering? I do agree with the lack of sleep! She was sleeping great, no fever & they just kept coming in. It might be the clinic/doctor preference...
