Wood Stoves for heating

Hi everyone. Just wondering who else uses a wood stove for heating their homes and what kind of effect it has? We have switched this year to one because of oil rates. It is actually in our basement and we use the furnace fan to blow the heat up into our house. It heats nice, but of course there is always the smell from when we load, etc. How badly can this affect my daughter? She may think it is the neatest thing, but i know its not great for her. Thanks for any info!!

I love, love, love wood heat. I dont have it in the house we bought, but I use to.

There is nothing like it; however!

There are many draw backs. Smoke can fill the house if you have problems getting it started. It is very very drying to the lungs & sinuses so CORRECT humidifying is essential.

This can be tricky since humidifiers can also be a breeding grown for mold etc. We had one attached to the woodstove itself. It was something there long before I came along so I dont know much about it.

Its also dirty & a lot of work.....

I would love to get one of those outdoor wood furnaces that way we can still use our hot water baseboard heat without the smoke & smell issues, but they arent allowed where we live!

I think there are many in this dilemma. Sorry I cant be of more use, but IMHO try it....keep an eye on your child & take it from there. Worse that happens is that if does affect her & you have to stop using it!

Our CF docs have said...NOO...NOO to woodstoves...So, ours is going to sit in the corner for another winter. I'm hoping my husband is going to hire someone to remove it. I miss it sooo much, but know it's better that we don't use it.

Our CF doc also said no to wood stoves as well. Too much particulate matter floating in the air to be inhaled. Soo, we have a fire place we do not use in our house. It really does affect her immediately; I noticed on Halloween some people had these smoke blowing machines; to be spooky in their trickor treating outside. Maggie would walk by and immediately start coughing; saying bad air. She's been near 2 outside fires lighting marshmellows ; she starts coughing right away and it hurts her lungs.
