I work part-time - would love to work full-time, but my children (and myself!) would suffer, regardless of one having CF. I don't want to be a parent that gets home between 5 and 6 then the kids go to bed 2 to 3 hours later. That's just not enough time for me. We have a wonderful nanny who cares for them while I'm away (730-130). I'm happy both from the "me time" aspect and also because I spend so much time with them. We are in a very fortunate position that I don't "have" to work...which is understandably not the case for everybody. In addition, my children are kept out of daycare and avoid many ailments as a result. Once they reach school-age...well, that's another issue!!

I wish I could stay home with my daughter, but being the only provider in our family, I have to do it.

It does add stress and late nights, but my employer is really understanding and allows extra time to get to work and time off when needed. If that wasn't the case I don't know if it would work out so well.

My daughter is also getting older and starting to do things like her vest on her own in the evenings before I get home from work. Big help right there.

Hi,
I am also a teacher. I've worked since my son with cf was 6. Working has been fine for me. As teachers, I think our schedules work well with cf. My son, Brad, does many of his hospital stays during our school breaks when they can be arranged that way. When your son starts school, your schedule will be almost the same as his. I don't know how your school is, but at the schools I have worked at, I've been able to leave as soon as my students are dismissed. I can just take home my planning, grading, etc to do from home. As a teacher, you probably have plenty of sick days you can use when your son is ill. Brad has had a lot of struggles with his cf in the past three years, but I've been able to hang in there at work. It's been a great career choice for me. Granted, I didn't teach when Brad was as young as your son, but I think you can do it.

Hello Rosesixtyfive!

I also went back to work when my son was 6 months. It was really hard for me too. I had to go back for financial reasons. I actually posted a similar question when I was trying to prepare myself to go back. Being a parent to a child with CF can be difficult and often a balancing act. I say difficult because I often question the choices I make about 5,000 times.

You are doing a great job and will continue to do a great job! I found going back to work (I work 3 days a week 7:30 -4:30) has given me a chance to relax a little. We have a great home day care we take my son to. The women who watches Owen has a son with Asthma so she understands a lot of what I am concerned about. I actually adjust my schedule to give him all his vest and neb treatments when he is sick but that is because I am a control freak. I am sure she could do a great job. Actually my son eats and sleeps better at daycare than he does for me so that is also a huge blessing.

I hope you find a great daycare situation. Sometimes it takes a while, don't get discouraged! Keep up the good work<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
