WOW!! Why do you think that they make Fords and Chevrolets or more exact why do they make several brands of enzymes. We live in a capitalistic society with competitive choices.

It is my understanding that the df508 has 2 folds and the vx809 works to fix one of those folds. It may be that a combo of vx770, 809 and another drug is what is needed to correct the df508. First it is amazing they can figure this out AND it is great that other companies are working on this. There will be more access now to more compounds through high throughput screening. It is FANTASTIC that more companies are getting involved. Also, the CFF has added it's own scientists to look into the issue. This is a great thing for the community!

Cheers,
Edan.

When only one company manufactures a product, that is called a MONOPOLY. A MONOPOLY, other than a public utility, can, pretty much set the price at whatever the traffic will bear. When there is more than one manufacturer of that product, there is competition. Competition creates price reduction.

I hope that the CFF funds many companies and thus keep prices at the LOWEST possible level.

I've gotta agree with Bill. You don't want to limit your possibilities when dealing with potential cures, or at the very least, treatments for diseases like CF. VX might work well, but perhaps Genzyme will work better, or for more people. Imagine if they had said of penicillin, "well, this stuff works great, let's stop here."

The more people working on this problem the better!

A Vertex researcher posted on Reddit once, and described the process of finding these corrector drugs. My takeaway was that they have found many combinations that will correct the DF508 or whatever else - the problem, as he described it, was that almost everything was dangerously toxic.

It makes sense to me, that if there are just a bunch of combinations that need to be tried to find a corrector, the CFF would enlist as many researchers and companies as possible.

I am not a doctor, researcher, or scientist so please take everything above with a grain of salt!

I understand what a monopoly is and I know it's good to have choices for everything. I also am glad too that they are researching all different companies and ways to find a drug to help the DF508 gene. On the business side of it I just think of how much money cff probably put out to vertex hoping they had the "golden ticket" for CF. Was it a breakthrough with cf for what they did discover and come up with, yes. I just hope vertex keeps working on it along with the other company. I would love to see a drug that will help the other 90 percent (which includes me) of cf people the way the VX-770 will help the small percentage of cf patients when it is approved and on the market next yr.

I know it will happen, it's just going to take more time but eventually it will happen.

I knew I would spark up some conversation. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> Stay strong my fellow cf'ers.
