Worried about a friend with CF.

I have a wonderful friend w/ CF who has just been admitted into the hospital and is coughing up a lot of blood. I know a little about the disease, but not enough, and I know that right now is an awful time to start asking her a lot of questions. Is she going to be ok? =\ I know that you guys can't give me a diagnosis for her or tell me for sure that she'll be alright, but is this common? I'm just very worried.

It does happen, yes. Lung tissue is delicate and full of veins and arteries. When you get an infection it can create a sore, kind of like a zit, only larger. When that breaks open it bleeds like a popped zit and then you cough it up. It's scary, I've had it only once myself and even with a fairly extensive medical background it freaked me out.

As you said, we can't really give you any concrete answers. Most of the time, with proper care, people bounce back just fine. Keep us posted

I've had some hardcore lung bleeds before, lol. When I was 21, I had one so bad that I was filling glasses (2 in total from the first 4 hours) with blood, and coughing so hard from it that I pretty much transitioned from coughing blood to heaving blood, lol.

We called the CF doc I had at the time before anything else on his little emergency contact thing, and he said do not go to the ER right away unless you want them to cut you open and try to plug it manually.
He told me to take some vitamin K, see if it slows down within an hour or two, and if it does then just wait it out and relax.

aaaaand so I waited. It did start to slow, but it kept going on for the entire night. I had to sleep sitting up, waking up constantly as it plugged up and re-opened, and I'd start bleeding a pretty nasty amount again, and the night just went on like that with me getting only 2 hours of rest in total.

After that initial night tho I was in much better shape, just having moderate bleeding every day for the rest of the week, until it finally stopped.

It was pretty ***** nasty, but it didn't kill me, lol.

So chances are your friends gonna be just fine.

Also, i doubt she's gonna care if you're there asking her questions, lol. If anything, the company would probably be appreciated since ***** like this can freak people out sometimes.
