It is wonderful that you want to write a book. I think it is amazing how writers feel the writing bug deep inside. I ditto Nightwriter and other about taking a writing class. I have seen many manuscripts with gems of imagery and insight interspersed here and there among a bunch of spewage

For about a year, I have been editing for an publisher of romance, fantasy, sci-fi and some young adult fiction. Most of the authors belong to writing groups, either on-line or through their local library. You should also lurk around the blogs and forums focused on publishing companies, agents and editing. They give authors inside info on who pays royalties on time, whose contracts are author-friendly...etc.

If you are interested, I'd be happy to look at your work for free. I can also PM the addresses of these industry blogs/forums, but the ones I am most familiar with are focused on fantasy and romance. Another thing you can do is go to the websites of some of your favorite authors, read everything on their sites. You will probably end up with info on their publishers, writing techniques, favorite site...etc.
