I hate it when there is bloodwork to be done, too. Emily is a "hard stick." It's tough to find her vein and then they roll and they can never get enough, or get the IV started or whatever. It's awful. I feel for you!

I have gotten into the habbit of telling them right off the bat that she is a tough one to "poke." I will usually say, "Whoever you are going to call when you can't get it, call them now." (I'm nice about it if they are nice to Emily, otherwise I turn into momzilla about it!) There is no reason for Emily to suffer multiple sticks. I'd rather they just get whoever is the best at it right away.

For some reason the EMLA cream doesn't work for Emily. We've had it a few times and it doesn't make a difference. The last time we had an IV they used a numbing spray which worked wonders!

Every appointment is stressful, but the "birthday vist" as we call it at our clinic is definately the worst. good luck!

We have the lab paperwork sent to us and go to a free standing lab. I don't want the boys to associate the CF clinic with anything painful. We get the cups for urine ahead of time and turn that all into the free standing lab.

blessings,
missa

Craig had his bloods drawn a couple of weeks ago. He goes for his x-ray and scan next week, we have had to break up the day as he too was having a hard time getting blood.

This time however, his own CF doctor took the blood (something that he always wanted to avoid)and he got it first time as much as was needed.

Before sometimes it would take them 4 or 5 times to get it in and draw blood. I always had craig straddle me and I held him as tight while they stretched out his arm or leg. After 30 mins of him screaming I would be in tears with him it was so difficult.

Thiss time, with the cream, he was laid down on bed and held down, very strongly and the blood draw took only 5 mins if that. Yes he sreamed, but it was because he was being held down and it was only 5 mins. I would suggest this as a course of action.

As for the hand washing, with you on this one. You are talking about health care professionals, I'm pretty sure that they can take being told to wash their hands, afterall they should know of the dangers, the only thing you are doing is embaressing them (if they havn't washed their hands)
