I am worried I have a yeast infection, but I am not sure what the symptoms are. Like most CFers I am on a lot of meds and I know that can lead to yeast infections. I was just wondering how you know you have one and did you treat it with over the counter stuff or did you go to the gyno? Also what do you tell your gyno about CF becuase mine has never dealt with a CFer before...what info is and isn't important for her to know? Thanks in advance to anyone who write!!!

Ah yes, the yeast infection....The symptoms can be mild or really rough. Vaginal itching is the biggy. YOu may experiance more discharge than usual, it may be tinted yellow, and it may smell. You may even feel a burn when you pee. In persons who take a lot of antibiotics, yeast infections and thrush (like a yeast infection in your mouth) are common. Strong antibiotics will sometimes kill off the good bacteria in the vagina and mouth and that starts up the infection. It's a big inconvienance, but both are easy to treat. If I get one unexpectantly, I use over the counter stuff. Usually when I am prescribed antibiotics, I go ahead and ask for Diflucan. It's a prescription drug that treats yeast. It's a pill and it clears things up pretty fast, or can be taken as a precaution. There are also mouth rinses and waifers that can be prescribed for thrush. Symptoms of thrush are dry mouth, coated toung, and the corners of your mouth will get sore and may get crusty. Babies get it alot. It is important to treat it soon though because it could lead to urinary tract infections and possibly a kidney infection. I had one last year and it was PAINFULL. It should take about two days to clear up w/ over the counter stuff, and Diflucan shows results in about 24 hours. Even if you take the pill med. go ahead and buy a vaginal itch cream, like Vagisil, to help ease your discomfort. Avoid sex, it will be uncomfortable, and a UTI is more likley. As a precaution, eat yogurt. It contains acidopholis (you can get it in pills next to the vitimins at the store), and helps combat yeast. If your "problem" doesn't ease up after 72 hours, you should see the gyno.Eventually you will get more intune with your body and this will be easy.HOpe this helpsDebbie22 yr old w/ CF

P.S. Give your gyno your CF doc's contact info and "demand" that she get in touch with them. Any info that you think is important, she should know, and she will feel better knowing that she has someone to refer to.

Thank you for the responses! My only symtom is major itching <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-blush.gif" border="0"> I started eating yogurt and taking acidopholis pills the second I noticed discomfort, hoping that would take care of it, but I guess that wasn't enough. I have been lucky and this is my 1st yeast infection, but as I get older I am on more and more meds so I have a feeling that yeast infections may not be so uncommon in my future...thanks again girls!

Hi,When you are on antibiotics, yeat infections are so comon. I do not have CF but am the mom of a 5 year old with CF. I get yeast infections whenever they put me on antibiotics. I take a chewable acidopholis and eat a lot of yogurt. Also the diflucan works. I have never had good luck with the over the counter creams alone but they might help in combination with the diflucan or the acidopholus/yogurt. I have also been told to not eat as many carbs like bread, potatos or pasta when on an antibiotic because they can aggrivate a yeats infection. (but I don't know if that would cause you a problem with your weight) Good luck.AndreaMom of Rachel 5 with CF and one on the way.

It's amazing the havoc a few billion microscopic buggers can wreak!I have spoken to many about this problem - recently on a girls night away. One of the girls is a dietician and she reckons only eat the (more expensive) pot set yoghurts, not the crappy runny stuff they try to sell you - it's full of white sugar anyway, and there's only a tiny amount of Acidophilus and Bifidus (the ingredients you are looking for). Over here there is a product called Canesten. you can get is with a single dose pessary and vaginal cream for quick relief. it works a treat. here it's over the counter med in pharmacies - i think you call them drug stores. $AUS15.00 per go.i started getting thrush at 15 y/o and didn't know what it was until i plucked up the courage to ask my doc at 19 y/o. 4 years of itching and mild odour. Bugger! Now i ask them everything, i don't care how embarassing it might be! i figure if they haven't heard worse they've probably heard of IT and if not, they're going to learn something to help out someone in the future.
