young children and ports?

My daughter, 6, just finished her 4th admit since Feb. The doc's wanted to give her a port this time but we decided to wait till the next admit.( hopefully not so soon) My concern is about playing. Does it hurt very much when playing rough like kids do? Tramplines, and jumping, stretching and bending in dance class? How restrictive has been on any of your kids? Any input would be helpful.

I can't give much input about the chance of it getting bumped during play, but I can tell you that my daughter (who is now 18 ) has had a port for a year now and wishes she had taken the doctor's advice to have one put in years ago. It has saved a LOT of pain and heartache trying to get picc lines started. We live nearly three hours from our care center, so it has also saved a tremendous amount of time traveling and hospital visits. When she needs antibiotics we just "hook up" at home (with a prescription for meds from the doctor, of course) and start treatment. We could never have done this when she used picc lines. She never wanted one because she thought she would have a huge lump under her skin, but it really is hardly even noticeable. She is still quite active, participating in the high school pom dance team and snowboarding with no problem at all. In my humble opinion. I think it is worth the trade-off for your child to have a port and be a little more careful. The convenience is worth it.

Our daughter is going to be 3 in Dec, she had a port placed last Dec, because she typically was being admitted every 6 mo. She is a terrible stick and was running out of iv sites so we chose to place a port. You have to flush the port monthly with saline and hep lock it so it doesn't get blocked but that is the only maint. or way they will even know that it is there. Our daughter knows what it is and she plays with it by pushing on it and showing it to people. The only problem we have had was hers flipped backwards and they had to go in surgically and flip it back over. The doctor said that she had only seen 2 other flip over like that and this was at Riley in Indy so they I am sure see lots of ports with all of their cancer patients. I would recomend it simply to save yourself time and grief , lab work can be done from this you can do iv therapy at home instead of in the hospital and there are many other advantages. Hope this helps you

Hi,Ive had my port for almost two years, and even tho im not in many contact sports, I dont even notice its there.. its very nice for when u are just plain sick when you get into the hospital, and its a quick pinch then over with.. theres no mess.. its very nice. There is almost no worries.. Since she is not a rambuncious little boy then i would have no worries all in all, the pro's outweigh the cons by far..btw, i had a trampoline, and was also in dance class and it was the best thing for me.. Stretching is the best.. and it wont pull or hurt or anything..

having had a port for a year and 10 months now, i'm all for it. it's much easier that looking for another vein to poke every couple of days. and as long as noone hits you hard at the exact spot where it's placed, it's fine i mean, mine survived physical activities, tight hugs, sex, basically your average life of a young woman, and it's all good. the only thing is that because of the way it's placed, it gets uncomfy if i wear a bra that's too tight, but (A)i just wear more loose bras [not 34D but 36D] and (B)your daughter being just 6 years old, she doesn't have the bra issue on her plate yet it does look fine, it's just a bump under the skin, as soon as you explain what it is it's amusing for everybody - all my friends had seen it and made jokes of this being my third nipple. it even made me unique in a hospital ward once because there were many girls my age and it was like, lois has this cool thing
