Hi there,

I just got a call from clinic and they want me to start giving our son a pill form of zinc each morning. They brought up that they have a child that started taking Zinc and his weight has greatly improved.

I was wondering if any of you have had any luck with Zinc? I'm desperate for something magical to kick up my son's appetite. I know this battle is one most of us all face. Ohhh it's just so frustrating dealing with it with a picky toddler. I feel like such a bad mom. I buy all this crap and special goodies and it all ends up on the floor. I was brave enough to ask today if at what point to we start talking feeding tube. The lady answered "We are already talking feeding tube'. Well, Thanks so much for letting me know!

I've been on Zinc for a long time now, it initially helped my weight but that seems to have tapered off (since I'm fairly PI I still have weight problems). But I am not sure if this is 100% correlated but my height went crazy after I was on Zinc. During those couple years my BMI went up a bit and I grew from <5'4 to now 6'0. Obviously puberty etc. had to do with it but it seemed that results started right when I startedzinc.

Also for the appetite thing...I am also really picky and don't like to eat a lot of food and have specific cravings haha it kinda sucks. But two things that help me are Periactin (generic cyproheptadine) and Miralax powder 2-3x per week. It helps my appetite alot and I eat more but because of my PI I can't gain weight still and it looks like feeding tube time, but I've heard they aren't too bad and if it gets me 40lbs or so I'd be accepting it everday!!

I'm pretty sure the abdecks have zinc in them. My son is on GSH (glutathione), which I believe made a big difference in his weight. He is also on Magnesium because it's supposed to have some effect on pseudomonas.

Check out Amy's blog, she has some great info. There isnt anything about zinc unfortunately, but it wont hurt <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

My daughter is on zinc also. She has been on it for a year now. Doc said it should help. So far so good. I don't have anything to compare to because she was an infant when they put her on it.
