ZITHROMAX

Does anyone find that taking zithro helps with keeping the pseudo knocked down? If so how long have you taken it and what difference have you had with what shows up in your cultures?

My girls have been taking Zithromax for about two and a half years and they have not cultured P.A. again since they started. They have cultured many other fun bugs though!

Zithro is actually used to lessen irritation/inflamation. To my knowledge it actually has NO effect on Pseudo. there is more on this in the adult section if you want to go in there and run a search or ask Amy, our resident drug expert

I do think zithro is helpful though on cutting back exacerbations(sp), particularly if there is any asthma/allergy element involved.

I was told the same by my doc, that Zithro used long term is to lessen irritation/inflammation, and that due to less inflammation, you get a few less exacerbations. I've been on Zithro now for about 2 months, and I have noticed that my breathing is a lot more easier.

Zithromax has zero - count 'em zero - effect on PA.

But if inflammation is down in your lungs (something taht zithro does do), PA is less likely to OVER grow.

I had a similar experience when I decided to treat my raging allergies. The inflammation promoted RAMPANT lung infections for me. As soon as I got my allergies under control, lung infections all but disappeared. I still cultured PA, however. Almost all CFers who get PA almost never get rid of it.

doesnt zithro prevent pseudo from forming the biofilm therefore preventing the bacteria from developing into mucoid

Amy, I think your words are too strong as usual. While Zithromax is perscribed to help with inflamation, there are studies that have been done that does show some interation with the outer wall of PA.

Why don't you come out of your "anonymous" shadow and show us your name. Or are you too scared to make such bold statements and be held accountable?????

If you have a PA infection, and you treat it with zithromax, the PA infection will not go away. THIS was my intention in my post. In fact, there is STRONG warning on Zithromax's PI against giving zithro to CF patients because of its lack of effect on pseudo.

SO if you think my words are too strong, take it up with the FDA buddy, because they're the ones that approved zithromax's PI.

Zithro may have effect on biofilm, but this is not the same as having an effect on the infection like Cipro or Tobramycin would. Biofilm is the protective shield that PA and other virulent bacteria create to shield itself from infections.

So, if you have a Biofilm PA and throw Tobra at it, the Tobra may not get to the bacteria due to the biofilm.

If you have a Biofilm PA and throw zithro at it - the biofilm may be destroyed. Then you throw Tobra at the biofilm PA and Tobra is able to kill the PA.

I'm not looking for any argument here. I didn't say it was necessarily going to kill Pseudo or even perscribed to do so. I believe you read the study I posted in the adult forum. Anyway, don't jump down my thoat. If you look at what you wrote and what I replied with, I think its clear you are the one making the bold statements.
