Has anyone had sinus surgery due to polyps?

Hello! I'm new to forums and blogs ... I feel like a clumsy dinosaur! Anyway, I have two girls with CF, age 13 & 8, and my 13yo has sinus polyps requiring surgery, which is scheduled for mid-December. The polyps are causing demineralization of the bone around the sinus because they are so large. I can't find good info on CF and this surgery on the internet and was wondering what experiences anyone has had with the surgery and what the recovery and post-surgery health was like. Any advice, 411 would be GREATELY appreciated!

Welcome to the site.

My now 5 yr old son with cf has had a nose polyp surgery/ sinus surgery in December 2005 and then a clean out of the sinuses again in Jan 2006. He just had another nose polyup surgery in October 2006 and then another clean out a week later of the sinuses. His polyups were so big they blocked his airways-- he was not breathing thru his nose at all for the first surgery and then the second they came back really quickly on the left side and were working at coming back on the right. He had had 2 lung cleanouts before his surgery and they balme that mostly on his sinus mess. He had another lung cleanout beginning in October 2006 and he also had the polyps back. I hate those pesty things.......... Hopefully now they will not come back.

He did have cleanouts before each surgery and then for the removal was in the hospital for 2 to 3 days after and then went home. Same with the second surgery. The post op clean outs he went home on the same day. He had NO pain after these. He never took any pain medicine even though they prescribed some. So if that helps you any. We do the nasal washes daily and nose steriod morning and night.

I am just hoping they DON'T come back!!!!

If you have any other questions feel free to private message me.

Just a quick run through, I hope it helps.

My sinuses were full of polyps when I was 12.....real bad were, talkin all my sinuses. The cat scans that were done caused my neck to get soar for several days due to the way they had me laying. The numerous doctors & tests were more scaryat the time than the actual polyps. Before surgery I spent about 3 hours being prepped.....IV, medical history stuff, lots of questions about medical allergies. Going in they gave me anasthetic through the IV and inhaled.....I think it was both. After surgery they removed the breathing tube just as I was waking up.....threw up several times. After fully waking they removed the plug of gauze or whatever it was in my nose. It felt like my head had decompressed when they did that. There was a lot of blood, but only what had drained down through my sinuses. I was drowsy for about 4 hours after first waking up. The next few days I couldn't swallow anything other than juice because of the soar throat. It took about two weeks for the soarness in my throat to completly subside. I also had to go back for a cleanout because of the clotted blood that formed after the surgery.....which is normal by the way. I didn't have any infections or major problems afterwards. If I can find some info on the actual procedure I'll post it.

hey there! welcome

i've had the polyup surgery 6 times...going on 7. warning: they grow like weeds, and theres not a whole lot you can do about it.

somethings are though:
1) ENT sol...hypertonic saline irrigation....helps delay, in some cases
2) other types of irrigation...some people (ask you doctor, because i have only heard of this- never heard of anyone doing it) use nebulizer tobi through the nose
3) IBprophen (motrin) regimin. i took 1200 mg in the mornign and 1200 at night. supposedly it helped delay it.... but i know one girl who ever since doing this, hasnet had a surgery for 4/5 years.

these all only help some people. the only other thing to do, is keep taking em' out until they stop growing back. the one thing i do recommend is wait untill you NEED to take them out (aka, can't breath out of both nostrils or its so annoying they need to come out)

since im only 16, i dont know what the technical term for it was, but i had some reshping/something done to my nose so that it would help for further polyup removal.

i really hope this helps- private message me with any other questions...im a veteren at this. :p

I am also a veteran at this polyp stuff. I am 22 yrs old and I had the surgery three times when i was in my early teens. I prob had them in between the ages of 11 and 14. The first two times, I had nasal cleanouts, maybe a few months before the surgery, in hopes that the surgery wouldnt have to be done, but in the end it did. The third time, they decided to do the nasal cleanout, in addition to the surgery, so I was in a few days longer, but two days later I was out riding my bike. After that I was one of the ones to go on the Motrin therapy and I have not had a surgery since. I take high doses of the motirn and am very careful to eat a meal with the meds, as they can be rough on your stomach. Hope this is helpful!

I am a 33 yrs old with CF (very mild case) and I have had 3 nasal polyps/sinus clean our surgeries. Lots of bleeding my first surgery. I have lots of damage to my sinus (bone) due to the polyps being left along for so long. Other surgeries were very minimial and much easier to recover from. I haven't had a sinus surgery for over 10 years and doing fine so far.
