Tap Water

    1) I'm not going to weigh in on the tap water issue other than to say that US tap water is very safe for the most part, and yes if you sterilize afterwards it will kill Naegleria fowleri (the 'brain-eating ameoba') that is making the news. There are some viruses and hardy bacteria that will...

    high billirubin

High bilirubin is caused by a multitude of liver issues. Bilirubin is removed from the bloodstream by the liver, and then incorporated into bile and excreted out of the body via the GI system. Gallbladder issues, including gallstones can cause it as the gallbladder collects/stores bile. As...

How often do you vest while in for a tuneup?

I would stick to 4x/day. That is the norm for most in-patient stays, and I suspect you won't see much difference. At this point I'd give the abx a couple of days to start working and keep up with 4x/day and see what happens.

Flu Mist Clinic at my daughter's school

While I would not normally suggest such an act, I would honestly keep the girls home tomorrow and talk to the school administration about this 'stunt' of over-reaching. FluMist is very specifically contraindicated for anyone that might be exposed to compromised patients. This includes CF as...

    Lung Function

Amber, Bill's reply is spot on. I just wanted to add that the most valuable part of your FEV1 is not the actual %, or a comparison to others normally.

It is the trend for YOU. FEV1 is a solid indicator of lung health. If you are at 60% but stable then you likely good. If you were at...

    Sweat Test Required?

At this point you have 3 kids that are both carriers for the most common defect causing CF. It sounds like your son is symptomatic and your daughter could be (salt crystals in common in CF but not otherwise usually). What *I* would do is push for the CF center to run a complete genetic panel...

    Side effects for Vancomycin

I can't say for sure it doesn't happen, so while not common it does appear it can happen. If you are not sure I'd push the nurse to consult a physician.

    Pseudomonas treatment

Ok, based upon prescribing guidelines there is no approved protocol for 750mg TID for Cipro. The max recommended dosage is 1500mg/day, 750mg BID. However, a physician can prescribe anything they feel is necessary and CF patients often exceed the 'guidelines' regularly. However, there are...
