25 pounds in 5 months...

Diagnosed at 40, and was at a very slim weight. Within the last 5 months, I have gained 25 pounds and have NOT changed the amount of food I have eaten, or the exercise level I maintain. I am losing my mind. I don't care that CF'ers normally don't gain weight - I have...and am not happy with it one bit.

I take Pulmozyne each day, Cayston/Tobi every other month. That's it.

Has anyone else had this?

I am losing my mind and getting bummed out - and none of my clothes fit.

It could be the stress of the dx. Stress can cauuse weight gain just as easily as it can cause weight loss. It could also be that you're now 40. You may have to modify your diet. Not necessarily to eating less, but eating differently. For example, try eating small snacks throughout the day to keep your metabolism going.

If you don't already exercise in the morning, you might try that. Starting your day with exercise also helps metabolism & digestion. I'm sure it's very frustrating. I hope you find a balance for yourself. Talk with your dietician too. They might have some ideas.

I just started cayston this month. I don't think its doing anything to help and am going to talk to dr to see if I can try to go without it. Otherwise, the tobi and pulmozyne have been since November. Maybe it's my 40 year old body telling me to step it up!

I don't think that turning 40 would mean an increase like that. That is a lot to gain so quickly, especially with no change in diet, exercise or medication. You should take to your doctor . . . CF or PCP to figure this out. Our geneticist told me that she gained weight very quickly and it turned out she had developed celiac's disease....while with some people the intolerance of gluten would result in a dumping much like CF pancreatic insufficiency, in her it turned into a symptom back up and of a crazy amount of weight being absorbed into her system.

This is definitely not a symptom to ignore....and our society is so "thin" obsessed that everyone immediately assumes it is you and what you eat...but if you know that isn't the case, get it checked out.

I would address this issue with your doctor.

One thought I had is; my daughter gains weight when her bacterial load is decreased. Meaning, when her body is not fighting infection and burning calories doing so, she gains weight. Usually happens after being treated with antibiotics for an infection; after she's off the antibitoics, the her weight increases. Her increase would be 3-5 pounds.

25 pounds is alot, though. Were you underweight? Could some of it be fluid retention? Talk to your doctor.
