shortened cervical length - how is this treated?

Bonnie-My cervical length decreased by a centimeter and I contracted from 20 weeks on but was still over 2 and my fetal fibronectin FFN test was negative so I did not have to do bedrest but I went through this whole routine. 2cm or less is high risk for preterm delivery so take it very very easy.

My advice, while unsolicited is, dont drive yourself crazy reading every study known to man about how the baby will do at xyz weeks. Do know that every day longer you can postpone birth will be highly beneficial. Try not to stress yourself out.

THey will probably do the u/s a couple weeks in a row since mine was chanigng alot they did 4 weeks and then periodically from then. The FFN test will just be a swab around the cervix and they run it ot see if baby proteins are present. If there are there is high % chance of delivery within 2 weeks, if there isnt then you are in the clear (but with 2cm still high risk and bedrest protocal). However even if you get a + try not to stress because there are some women who get a + but dont deliver right away.

Bonnie-If I were you just until you get everything checked out I woudl try lying down with the vest on and see how that goes if it doesnt work (I havent tried it) then I would have htat be 30 min you are upright but be laying down the rest of the day. Getitng sick woudl further complicate things so I woudl go conservative by biasing in favor of coughing and treatments. Could you do pep or acapella laying down on your side?

If you are feeling a pressure or back pain just know that that can be contractions, this early it can be hard to differentiate between contractions and pressure so you should get checked out if you feel it necessary--go with your gut.

Are you with a perinatologits? If you are not you definately want to ask for a referral for one. Take care and hang in there. Even if your FFN is positive they will start administering steroids to accelerate lung development and most babies do very well. 32 weeks is a 'magic date' at which the babies really do pretty well these days so dont fret you are getting there!
