4 weeks on antibiotics?

Hello.

I have been on two weeks of merrem and tobra and just today they switched the merrem to ceftaz cause I'm not responding as well as I usually do AND because they got back my culture and I'm now resistant to merrem. Urgh.

So, I will be on a course of IV antibiotics (tobra the entire time and 2 different meds for two weeks each) for a running total of 4 weeks plus 2 days.

I'm really stressing about this. I mean, I know I need to knock back the infection and not just stop when I'm still coughing up junk and not feeling "better", but in the same respect, I worry about the safety of being on tobra for 4+ weeks straight.

Has anyone else ever been on I.V. abx for 4+ weeks?? I just want to know I'm not alone here.

They are doing kidney and liver functions every week, so I assume that should catch if any meds are causing "issues", but I still worry and am really angsting about this right now.

Its kinda a double-edge sword, cause if I go off the meds and I'm NOT better, then the infection will likely rage and go crazy since I never effectively knocked it down, but if I stay on meds (and change them after 2 weeks), I risk kidney/liver damage and resistance issues.

I'm super scared right now. What has your experience been???

Thanks,

Wish I had some advice for you, but I just wanted you to know I was thinking of you! I am here at work, so am offering up short prayers for all of you. I know this is a hard time for you, but us ladybug-lovers stick together! Hope you are off IV's sooner than you think!

I think it won't matter when it's different meds. But my doctor never wanted to give me Tobra from more then 3 weeks. I think she was concerned about my kidneys but also concerned about my pseudo becoming resistent to it.

Even when I was not feeling better after 3 weeks she stopped my iv's. And I had to be off Tobra for at least 4 weeks I think before I could have another Tobra IV. Just to be on the safe side. She said when 3 weeks wouldn't do anything, 4 wouldn't either... And sometimes it can be that you will start to feel better after IV's have finished, at least that's what happened with me a few times.
