I have been on iv for 3 months & more straight always which included Tobra & at least one other med. BUT there was improvement so once we got to a plataue (sp?) then it was time to stop.

Thanks, ladies.

Marjolein, I'm still going to be on Tobra for about 30 days total. This is because they want to keep me on it with the other choice of med for a "synergy" effect. One I.V. antibiotic doesn't usually work as well and they didn't want to change the tobra to another one.

Mel, wow! 3 months at a time!!! I'm glad you got results though. I think at this point and time, my pfts ARE responding, but NOT like they used to, and when the cultures came back resistant to a med I was on, they wanted to change for that reason. Since it was likely I'd plateau or start sliding backward if I stayed on it for "nothing".

I feel like maybe this ONE time to be on tobra for a full 30 days MAY be ok, but next time I will require they get the necessary cultures and change my meds far in advance of 15 days if I'm not seeing results. I've learned my lesson in this too.

I'd hate to go off the meds since I'm already feeling worse and I'm still ON them... So, I personally think its better to kick the infection out completely rather than go off and let it thrive cause we stopped abx too soon. That was kinda the "nurse's" assessment as well. Its maybe more dangerous to stop a med when we're getting results but not quite "there" yet.

My biggest worry is the kidney/liver stuff, but my hope is that with weekly tests to see how I'm doing on it, I should (touch wood) be ok. Mel, did you ever have problems with liver/kidney stuff with tobra for 3 months? Were they checking every week?

Looking forward to more responses. Thanks, everyone!

No kidney or liver problems directly related to the Tobra. I was on continuous iv's so it really wasnt a worry, but they did do the weekly blood draws. I did have a few hearing tests to make sure nothing was going on in my head too (could have told them that <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif" border="0">). Granted I was on actigal for my liver due to other meds & tpn etc so that might have counteracted any affects as well.

OH BTW I stand corrected....it was 4 months last year. I got my picc pulled in time for Christmas!!!!
