Sounds like you have pleurisy!

Just b/c nothing shows up on x-ray doens't mean it's there! With CF - like bronchiectasis like i have - there is always inflammation so anymore wouldn't make an x-ray look any different. I should know b/c i just got over a 2 and a half week bout of pleurisy and how you described it is exactly how it happened with me.

I woke up on a Monday feeling like i had been shot. It was literally the type of pain that comes from nowhere but you can feel it lying there until you move or cough or breathe. When you do, it rips and sears and tears through. My upper right lobe(front and back) and my right side were in so much pain that got worse by the day. i was taking 3 motrins a day and only by the 3rd one would the pain stop. It hurt to cough, to sneeze, to move sometimes, to YAWN, to anything.

If you have a prescription for antibiotics, start them maybe. My doc wrote me a prescription for Tylenol 2 for the next time it happens, and also said that when it happens again, to order any of the antibiotics i have on hold at the pharmacy.

I hope that helps and that you feel better! it sucks b/c all you can is lie there!!

Vampy,

I think most have us have experienced killer pleurisy pains. But the part of your story that is jumping out at me is your face swelling. I don't know whether this applies to you, but that can be a symptom of allergy. I was wondering if your face started swelling after doctors examined you or before. I say this because face swelling can be an allergic reaction to latex which is what surgical gloves are made of.

Also was there anything unusual that you ate the night before? Did the doctors comment on your face blowing up to twice it's size? Do you have a regular doctor you can call? Did the ER doctors do anything other than an X-Ray?

When I've had that kind of "pleurisy" pain, I've used a "wet" heating pad. You can buy it in a medical supply store. The heating pad works by drawing moisture out of the air which makes the pad warm and damp (but in a good way), and it is very soothing. I have also used a rib support band that you fix around your chest, so that when you cough it is bearable. Also found in a medical supply store. Until you can find these things, if you have to cough, clutch a pillow to your chest and then cough.
