So my C.f. nurse says i should still stay on my ADEKS while also taking my prental vitamins. I have read in my pregnancy book that taking too many vitamins can sometimes be worse than not taking any at all. So i asked my ob doc. and she suggested i only take prenatals b/c she said that too much of certain vitamins can become toxic. What has your docs told you or have you heard anuthing about this before. (i am 7 weeks pregnant 22 yrs old.) Thanks so much and God bless you all!

Hi. I never took ADEKs and have always had normal vitamin levels. before becoming pregnant I did take an A+D supplement though (in addition to my other vitamins). Well I had labs drawn 2 weeks ago at 27 weeks pregnant and my vitamin A level was too low (the one your OB is worried about). The only A I was getting was via my prenatal vitamin. So I have learned that it is probably hard for someone w/ CF to get too much A. I had the same concerns which is why I stopped the A+D. I did a little reading last week about vitamin A and pregnancy and it is actually VERY rare for someone to get so much A that it harms the baby.

An idea is to keep taking your ADEKs and prenatal vitamins for a few more weeks together and have your vitamin levels drawn to see where you stand. If I had known what I know now about my labs (albumin too low, iron too low, A too low) I would have requested to have my levels checked a few months ago so I could start fixing any problems sooner.

Good luck!

Hi,

I normally take 2 ADEKs, but have gone down to 1 ADEK with 1 prenatal vitamin during pregnancy. This has kept my vitamin levels right where they should be. I still have to supplement with extra vitamin D though, but I was doing that pre-pregnancy as well. Vitamin A should not get too high during pregnancy, that's why 2 ADEKs might be contradicted. Just make sure they check your vitamin levels during pregnancy regardless of what option your doctor chooses and adjust accordingly.

my cf doc suggested i take one adek and one prenatal viatmin. me personally i like the abdek better, probably because in my mind i'm getting that one extra viatmin, but that's beside the point. but i'm cheap and haven't bought any adek or abdek in quiet some time. and my insurance doesn't pay for them (which is totally retarded). so i just take my prenatal viatmins. i picked them out cause they had the highest amount of b12 in it and i had read that it sometimes helps with morning sickness (hahaha didn't help me i was still sick as a dog). i haven't been told that i'm low on any levels so i'm assuming i'm doing fine. on top of the prenatal viatmins my high risk ob told me to start taking calcium and magnesium pills too cause i'm a "skinny white girl" (yes those are his exact words and we both laugh every time) and he's worried about my bones blah blah blah. does your ob know that we don't obsorb viatmins as well? maybe that's why he thinks you should be on the adeks while pregnant. i would have your ob and cf doc talk to one another and see what they would come up with.
