A.D.E.K. with prenatal vitamins?

This is a great question! DH and I are starting to try (again as we tried in the past with no luck) to get preggers and I'm curious when I should start taking prenatal? I know it does wonderful things for hair and nails... LOL. And, DH is deploying in a couple of months, so if it doesn't happen prior to that, can I continue taking prenatals even though he won't be here for 6+ months?

I'm also curious whether I can take them while we're trying with my Source CF (just like ADEKS)? My vitamin levels are usually pretty good even with just one source CF per day, so I don't want to overdo it. Hmmmm...

Vitamin A can cause developmental problems with the baby. I would stick with just the prenatal vitamins.</end quote></div>

The issue with that statement is that pwcf do not absorb vitamins as well as pw/o cf. I am pancreatic sufficient yet my vitamin A and protein levels went too low - hence I need more than the average person even though I don't have the malabsorbtion issues. I still think that we should have our vitamin levels checked a few times. And again, it is actually very rare for someone to get so much A that it harms the developing baby (but of course is a possibility).

Sonia - start taking them now. I believe the research has shown that having your levels adequate (especially enough folic acid) BEFORE you get pregnant is the best way to do it. I have heard a recommendation that every woman of child bearing age should be taking folic acid in case she were to get pregnant. Prenatal vitamins won't hurt you at all so you could take them while your DH is gone even if you aren't pregnant. If you are worried about your vitamin levels, just have them checked after a month or so of taking the prenatals. As far as I know though, it is pretty hard to go too high on our vit levels - a lot of vitamins are water soluble so if you take too much it just gets excreted in your urine.

Just wanted to say that taking a prenatal vitamin isn't a must - if you have your bases covered w/ other vitamins and supplements then you don't actually need a vitamin that says "prenatal".

Hey so my ob said taking prenatal vitamins prior to preganancy can really help the nueral development of your baby and can decrease the risk of spinabifida by a huge percentage. Having the extra folic acid in ur system bf you get pregnant is great for baby, and it doesnt hurt to take prenantals even when you are not pregnant, they are a great vitamin. I would check with your doc about if you should take them along with the adeks too though. But being on prentals while trying to concieve is definately recommended and ideal!!
