A hard decision on my end

Don't you just love jumping out of a perfectly good airplane and not know where you are going to land (and how)? (that's my description of coming to Japan in a nutshell!)
Sounds like taking the job is the right answer, but doing a little bit of checking before hand seems to make that decision more certain....good luck Faust!

How long ago did you use this 9 month trial work period? If it has been less than 3 years you DO have some protection if you take the job and then get sick:

<i>"For 36 months following completion of the trial work period, you can receive your full Social Security disability benefit for any month in which your earnings fall below the "substantial" level." </i> (<a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://ssa-custhelp.ssa.gov/cgi-bin/ssa.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=523&p_created=978802388&p_sid=Ux3bO-4j&p_accessibility=0&p_redirect=&p_lva=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX3Jvd19jbnQ9OCw4JnBfcHJvZHM9JnBfY2F0cz0xMDUsODgmcF9wdj0mcF9jdj0yLjg4JnBfc2VhcmNoX3R5cGU9YW5zd2Vycy5zZWFyY2hfbmwmcF9wYWdlPTEmcF9zZWFyY2hfdGV4dD10cmlhbCB3b3JrIHBlcmlvZA**&p_li=&p_topview=1)

I would say take the job, but first get the salary and benefit information in writing.</end quote></div>

Cool thanks Julie. Only problem with that is, my earnings being full time there would for sure be way past the "substantial" level they put on you. I think it's 920 a month GROSS. I plan on calling the SS tomorrow and asking about all the details.

Take the job. If they have a 401k then most likely they have STD and LTD and you can use those when/if you get sick.

It seems like a great opportunity and you seem very healthy from what I have read from your posts so I say go for it while you can!!!!!! Plus it adds into your work history so when you go back on SSDI (your own not survivor) I would figure it would increase your payments (DONT quote me, just an assumption).

Plus how much money are you getting now with SSDI and working barely part time? I am sure the new job will give you much more money that you can do alot of things with and even save some so when you can't work you are "ok".

Just my 2 cents!!!!
