A little concerned about non-cf daughter

ugh -- I'm sorry to hear this Tonya. Hopefully its a kid thing and not a CF thing. . .but its so hard not to "go there" when these things come up with our non-CF kids. My middle son is very very tiny, like send us to an endocrinologist tiny. I have been known to call my CF center many times asking them to recheck his bloodwork and assure me he doesn't have CF. He is a carrier of my husband's gene and in order for him to have a different mutation than mine that Alyssa has, I'd have to also have CF. . .which doesn't seem possible. But my mind goes there every time.
Hoping that Becca is feeling better soon and that you don't have anything chronic on your hands here.

Thanks for all of the thoughts and ideas. I thought about a parasite as well. I can't begin to imagine where she would have come in contact with such an organism, but I guess you never know. As for a virus, I guess I ruled that out a few days ago thinking gastro viruses don't last more than a few days. That is why after about five days I started to worry about other causes. It is comforting to think this could still be virus that will run its course. At this point she is eating very little and still has terrible issues after anything she does eat. Tomorrow will be one week and she is starting to look as though she is losing some weight.

Thanks everyone for not calling me a basket-case mom. I knew you would all understand Mylogical part of my brain is telling me this is something we can resolve. The illogical part is having a field day, which is very annoying. Thanks for talking me down. I'll let you know what happens after today's appointment.

DS got a gastro bug in early september. I thought he had loose (liquid) stools due to the labor day weekend and snacking, maybe not taking enough enzymes. DH thought he seemed a little warm one night and sure enough he had a low grade fever (99). Then he was fine -- normal temp the next day, still had loose stools. This went on for over a week and a half. I think he survived on orange and lemon lime soda for most of a week.

We saw the pediatrician today. I have to say, I feel like it was a wasted appointment. This is the first time I have been disappointed with our pediatrician. He thinks she has a virus, and said she should be better by the weekend. If not, he will test her for E.Coli.

He did not even entertain the idea of a food allergy or any other reason for the problem. This issue is not a virus. There is no way this yellow, frothy, foul-smelling stool is a typical, run-of-the-mill virus. If it is, and goes away on its own, I'll be shocked. I guess only time will tell. I'll let you guys know if this progresses any farther. As for now, I guess we spend four more days like this. Thanks for the insight.

Tonya,

I hope it is just a stomach virus. Someone else had posted about the BRAT diet; but it is helpful for upset tummies. I use it sometimes for my daughter when her stomach is out of sorts. I give her white rice; toast, bananas. She is not into applesauce so we don't do that. But plain chicken and white rice seems to calm her tummy. Bulks up the stool, so it's not so runny. Ginger ale is also a favorite. And of course, good ole chicken soup.

When our family had a bad stomach virus; the stool smelled awful(sorry if TMI). It just smelled sick. But we were totally laid up in bed. Hope things improve.

Could she have the flu? My daughter had the flu last spring and although it did decrease her PFTs it hit her GI system really hard and the dehydration caused her to be hospitalized. This lasted 10 days the last 3 of which the hospital started her on 2 times daily probiotics for 2 weeks and then 2 more weeks 1 time daily.

My daughter is confirmed to be at least a CF carrier by genetics and still in limbo for a CF dx since she has MANY CF symptoms GI, lungs, arthritis, nasal polyps and pos/neg tests results, and significant improvement with Vest/hypertonic saline etc. (CF tx). I hope it isn't CF. Best wishes.

Tonya, Didn't your mom have cf but you never knew what mutations? While I don't think this sounds like a cf exacerbation I think it is a good time as any to rule out her having two mutations. One of the one's Andrew has an another...but then that would mean you or dad would be with 2 as well. Get your life insurance squared away for all first of course.

Lauren, you have an amazing memory! My mom was never officially diagnosed with CF because she always had negative sweat tests and at the time that was the only tool her doc used to rule out CF. But she was always treated as a cf patient with the same iv meds, therapies, etc. When Andrew was diagnosed all of the pieces of the puzzle came together.

I'm not thinking this is CF either....it's just on the back burner as something to think about. But at this point I also don't think it's a virus. I hope I am proven wrong.
