A simple question

Something that hasn't been mentioned yet but falls into the "up your treatments" category is exercise.

I once asked here when I should stop exercising...fever? aches? The consensus seemed to be high fever, no exercise. So, I take Advil to lesson the aches and go on a walk/jog. Then, I either take a nap if I can or I go to bed really early.

It is that season. I just had a cold that started with a sore throat but by day three, my whole chest ached--upper and lower lobes--and I was coughing up green from deep down. I didn't have the full-on fever and pleurisy though, which are my signals for abs, so I waited it out...about eight days.

This seems to be my "MO," but I agree that everyone is different.

Before Emily's cf dx it would drive me NUTS to see so many moms wanting their kids on antibiotics for the slightest symptoms... knowing that antibiotics won't do a thing for someone down with a virus. CF treatment necessitating so much abx use has taken a LOT of getting used to!

Emily's dr's don't start antibiotics right away but they would be really upset if I waited as long a 10 days to contact them if she was sick. She could lose dangerous amounts of weight as well as get so sick she'd take weeks to recover by that point. At the first sign of illness we are to increase her vest & inhaled meds (3x a day for slight congestion, 4x day for anything more) and if with increased therapy & rest she has a significant change in baseline symptoms after several days I am to call and we decide what to do. She's a child though and in the effort to preserve as much lung function as possible drs might tend towards more conservative treatment, especially since it's a little more guesswork trying to figure out exactly how she's feeling.

I disagree with the exercising thing. I think its PARAMOUNT to give your body rest when it is sick. Now maybe a very light 20 minute walk would be ok, but definitely nothing like you would do during a normal "healthy" day.

O also get a humidifer and vicks vapor rub - LOVE IT!

Jessica,

I totally disagreed with the exercise thing too when I first heard people here and on the bronchiectasis message board talk about jogging or cycling while sick. It is so counterintuitive to everything we have learned. When you are sick, you rest so that your immune system can focus on killing the infection. That makes total sense to me and still does. Especially when you know that getting physically "run-down" makes you sick and makes it take longer to get better.

Nonetheless, I have found that two things contradict this traditional viewpoint.

One is mucus clearance. I get superior mucus clearance from a heavy breathing walk than I do from the Vest...not saying that the Vest isn't great, but most of my infections are in the small airways which--I think--are best opened up by exercise. So when I am sick and those areas are starting to fill up with nastiness, I have found that the benefit of mucus clearance outweighs the detriment of getting tired.

The second thing is exercise is not the same as stress/getting run down. Stress and being overworked by unpleasant stuff makes me sick. Exercise...and yoga and pilates count too not just walking/jogging...makes me happy or at least more peaceful. This too goes a long way towards healing.

Sleep is crucial too...no doubt. Exercise without enough sleep would be a bad idea. My youngest kid is three so I have a little more control over my sleep than I used to. Thank God.

So this is the first time I have outlined this exercise thing this clearly for myself. Does it make sense. I'd love to hear other ideas.
