I'm leaving in a few days for a trip south with a college group for spring break. Habitat for humanity has a chapter at our school and we will be traveling 20hr on a bus, living in a church and building a house durring the day for 5 days. now, I've been away from home before, but i've usually stayed in a hotel. I'm also going with quite a few people i dont know and only one close friend and i will have little to no privacy for my treatmetns. i'm concerned about a few things including keeping up nutrition durring a busy week.

I felt like it was a once in a lifetime opportunity I couldn't pass up :) I'd love to hear some words of encouragement from people who have done soemthing similar

sounds like fun!

i would talk to the coordinator/leader of the trip and see if they or you can call the church, explain your situation and ask if it would be ok to use one of their sunday school rooms or if there is an empty office you could go into to do your treatments. do you have an acapella/flutter/pep? when i go on short trips i usually take my acapella b/c its considerably easier to travel with than my vest and since you'll be outside working on the house you should be pretty active so that might be an option. get some granola bars or little snacky type things that travel easily and throw a few into a backpack to bring with you to the worksite along with enzymes, inhaler(s) etc.

usually churches have big kitchens with icemakers, refridgerators, etc. so when you ask the church about using an empty room maybe see if it would be ok to store your meds in their fridge or use some of their ice and bring your own little cooler to keep meds cold in....

maybe bring a medium sized tupperware container to wash and store nebs in....

i would also be careful with what you're doing on the house. stay away from any sanders (the wood dust is terrible) or painting in tight enclosed spaces. those fumes can really aggrivate the airways!

hope you have fun! habitat is such a great organization <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

That is so awesome that you are "giving up" your spring break time to go help out those in need! That is such a humbling message for all of us.

I would just caution you to drink a ton of water and take mandatory water breaks. I once worked on a house all day and ended up with severe cramping and heat stroke. Jaime is completely right in that you have to be careful of all the fumes at the worksite. Dust could be an issue as well. If you don't mind wearing a mask, I think it would be a good thing.

The only other thing I thought of is bring a travel neb with you that you could plug into a car at the worksite in case you would need it.

Best of luck and God Bless!

Caryn,

Have fun, live your life and enjoy helping others that week. But not having access to proper food and treatments is huge. Keep in mind you are going to be burning twice as many calories building a house, and depending where in the south you are going, its going to be warm, so drink plenty of water and gatoraid to stay hydrated. I would also think about drink some high calorie drinks like ensure or even those 10000 calorie work out milk shakes. Also with the lack of privacy, dont be affraid to do your treatments in front of others, use it as a teachable moment to tell everyone about CF. Maybe the will go out of there way to donate or volunteer for CF
