Actually no one said they would use the electrodes for sure. I think I just read that in small children (ie babies and toddlers) who don't sweat much, they stimulate the sweat glands with electrodes. So maybe they won't do that. I probably need to call them, but I'm not sure who to call. I am not going to any of our doctors, I am going to a lab at the hospital. FYI, we are going to Cook's in FW if anyone is familiar with the testing there.

eta: PS: Yes, strabismus would be a more severe form of amblyopia. My son is severely far-sighted bc of the amblyopia, but without his glasses he probably would have gotten strabismus by now.

I will add that the electrode that stimulates the sweating is not "painful" but to a child your son's age I suspect it will be uncomfortable. Our daughter was 3 at the time and did not care for it at all.

Our first round of sweat tests was at a lab at a hospital as well. I would ask them how often they do the test. This may save you some grief later if someone decides it all needs to be re-done because the place that did it the first time wasn't experienced enough (can you tell this happened to us....)

For my daughter, I brought her older sister's Leapster, which was complete contraband and it kept her very distracted. Another great idea I read here is to go by yourself to the Dollar store and pick out a few small items. Stash them in your purse and bring them out at the appropriate time. Anything new will be a nice distraction. Good luck and please let us know!

Amazingly we got the results of our genetic screen back yesterday (they told us it wold take 3-4 weeks). Good news: we got a double negative. But the doctor got a lot of info back from the lab with the test, and apparently my son has a 1 in 240 chance of having the disease anyway... This is partially based on the fact that we are white caucasion, teh fact that this particular test only screens for 23 mutations, etc.

So we are still having the sweat test tomorrow (Friday). But the doctor said he feels much better about it and suspects we will get a negative tomorrow. He also said if the sweat test is negative, he does not believe further testing wil be waranted in this case.

I have already decided that if we get a "high" negative number I will push for further testing anyway... what would you all consider a cut-off? From what I've read in these boards, I'm thinking if we get higher than a 30 I will push for another sweat test or a full genetic panel.

BTW. Cook's is a CFF center, so that part is covered.

Thank again. This has been one of the longest weeks of my life...
