acid reflux

Okay guys,

I was just started on Nexium for acid reflux. I am on IVs and had gone to my doc for a follow up and was complaining about increased cough, sore throat, hoarseness, shortness of breath, tightness/discomfort in my chest not to mention that I had felt acid coming up my esophagus at times. The doc told me that with all of those symptoms it seemed to indicate acid reflux.

I am not doubting his conclusion at all. I am simply wondering how long it took for those of you on meds for acid reflux to notice a difference. I have noticed a little less shortness of breath today, but my throat is feeling worse. I am getting this nagging urge to cough on occasion which is made difficult by this swollen/inflammed feeling in my throat ... I almost feel like I am getting laryngitus (which I seem to get every few months anymore). I didn't know if this was a normal adjustment to the meds or not. That is why I am asking.

Thanks for any insight and experiences you all can offer on this - this is the first time I have been prescribed meds for acid reflux - lol I thought this (reflux) would be one CF problem that I would miss at the roulette table but alas NO lol.

Thanks again,
Lindsey

I have used Prilosec (Nexium's precurser) for years, and have never noticed any side effects. It works wonders for GERD. At least for me.

Hi Lindsey. I haven't had all the symptoms that you have had. I only had heartburn and the acid coming up my throat. I do get very mild sore throats every once in a while, but I don't know if it is from the acid reflux or not. I guess it never crossed my mind. I am on Ranitidine (I believe generic for Zantac). I take one in the morning and one at night. I noticed a difference almost immediately. I would have the heartburn/acid reflux symptoms almost everyday. Now that I am on the med, I have been 95% better. I have only had a few days where I have also had to take Mallox and that is usually because of something that I have eaten. I was a bit apprehensive about taking another medicine, but now I'm glad that I'm on it. I sure hope the meds work for you. I didn't realize all those symptoms could be a sign of acid reflux. Hope it works for you!!

Hey girl,
My experience with Nexium isn't first hand, but I have helped my dad with it. (He's not the best at taking meds as prescribed). He was prescribed Nexium and was taking it like he would a TUMS--whenever he felt the heartburn. Once he started taking it at the same time every day and BEFORE he ate, his symptoms really improved. It took about a week of regular maintenance for things to settle in.

Sorry to hear you have to add yet another medication to your "quiver". I hope this one effectively targets the problem.

Oh, I just had a thought...did your doctor look in your throat? When I've been on antibiotics and start having a sore throat and scratchy voice, it's because I have thrush. I hope that's not what you've got, but if it is, it's easily fixed.

Hey Lauren,

Yeah they actually thought thrush was the problem at first but they couldn't see anything by looking in my mouth .. and as for the shortness of breath he thought maybe an over growth of yeast in my lungs from all the antibiotics.

Then I reminded him he gave me a weeks worth of diflucan for "thrush" when I left the hospital cause my voice was practically gone and usually that is a tell tale sign for me that I have thrush. It didn't really do much. My voice is back - but it didn't come back until AFTER I had been off the diflucan for a few days.
As for the other symptoms being indicative of reflux ... I didn't know that either, but it kind of makes sense once it is explained. He said the acid coming up your esophagus can hit the back of your throat and irritate it and cause you to cough and also give you the sore/hoarse throat - you might think it is just a CF cough but lo and behold it isn't. Then the same thing with the shortness of breath and tightness/discomfort in your chest it can be caused by the acid in you esophagus. I think all the antibiotics I am taking kick started the reflux - but I am most likley going to be on this med long term rather than just when I am on IVs.

Thanks for the info guys. Hopefully another day of taking it will help some, my throat is feeling better today than it was last night -- maybe I just need to drink more water too. Though I thought I had been drinking enough lol I downed a bottle last night right before I went to bed and it seemed to help some.

Note to self ... drink MORE water lol.

Thanks again guys,
Lindsey

My dd started taking prevacid two weeks ago for reflux.  She's
too young for me to know the symptoms, but she wasn't interested in
food and waking 5 or 6 times a night.  Docs said it was
probably silent reflux and I didn't really believe them.  But
I started the prevacid anyway and it took about a week to see a
difference.  Now she's eating food -- FINALLY!!!!  Sleep
is another issue all together!  I imagine the meds should kick
in by a week and hopefully you'll notice a big difference.
