Thanks Emily, Babara, Lauren and Chris!! I really appreciate your replies. I am staying on top of everything preventative that I can and we (her doctor and I) are very aggressive with her treatments, so maybe this is why she seems to be sick all the time to me. I want to stay right on top of everything as to prevent any lung damage that we can because I know once the damage is there we cannot reverse it!

Right now she is on her 2nd oral antibiotic in the past week, the first one Clyndamycin, we did for 5 days and it did nothing for the cough she has, just started Ceftin on Tuesday and she seems slightly better!

Anyway, thanks so much for taking the time to reply and the rest of you keep the replies coming!!

When I was a baby I had the bowel problems, that's when I was diagnosed. I had digestive problems when I was younger, I was on enzymes. I no longer take enzymes, I haven't taken them since I was 12 yrs old. I've never been hospitalized, just in for an hour for an i.v., never actually admitted. Oh yeah I did have my adnoids taken out in 2nd grade. I have had an i.v. six times, 2nd grade, 4th, 8th, 10th, 12th, and at 22 yrs old. My fev1 right now is 70% and I'm 19 weeks pregnant. So far I've been pretty lucky to have never been hospitalized. So hopefully I continue on this route.

You know, I come to this site as a CFer and as a mom, but not as a mom of a CFer, and I sometimes forget how hard it would be like to tbe the parent of a CFer - how hard for you...all the worry assosciated with CF. bah. I guess in that regard I am lucky becuase I worry about myself about one sixteenth as much as I do my kids.

I was very healthy as a child after my dx of failure to thrive at 6 weeks. I had a bout of pneumonia and an intestinal blockage when I was very small (6-7) and nothing since except for lots of sinus infections. I just cultured PA a year ago - and honeslty, since then I have felt a difference in my health. I am reluctant to go on IVs simply because I still respond to levaquin and cipro and I don't want to leave my kids (and part of me just isn't ready to go that route yet).

I was a competitive swimmer all through my childhood and high school and I credit this greatly to keeping my lungs clear and my health good. I highly suggest encouraging exercise now to get good habits started.

My clinic has never been aggresive with my care - and in some ways I think that did help me (I am only resistant to tobi or example - and I have never even been on it!). I know a lot of people would disagree with me on that since my PFTs are only in the 70s, but I think not culturing any bugs for 29 years had a lot to do with staying away from the clinic and the hospitals.

Anyway, that was a long response to your question.

oh, btw, my uncle is 55 years old and 11 years post tx with Cf, so as others have said, don't get too sucked into the numbers game.

My health as a child was always sick (lung, sinsus, stomach problems). My doctor told my mom I was just a sickly kid. We didn't know about my family's medical history (I am adopted) so we had nothing to start with. I had lot of coughs and sinsus infections. My mom always wondered why I grew so slowly (they figured it was due to my premature birth).

I took so many antibotics as kid that I became resistent to most by the time I was diagnosed. We know now why my joints hurt so horribly as a kid as well.

I had 2 surgerys on my nose right after my diagnosis. I had so many polyps from the "too many to count" sinsus infections as a kid.

My mom has a lot of guilt about my illness as a child (without a diagnosis). I am just glad we found out when we did. One thing I do know is that I recover quicker now than I did as a kid (we know what is causing my problems and we deal with them aggressively-- the the right medications and treatments).
