Hello,I am new to this forum. My son,Cian,3 wcf, is having a really tough time at the minute as we cant clear his mrsa or pseudo. He has had endless canulars, long lines, central and femeral lines but his iv access is really bad.We are due in theatre in the morning to attempt another long line to give him iv's but he had the same procedure 2 days ago and it only lasted 24 hours.
Can any body give me any info on whether or not a portacath would be a danger to him with his mrsa status??We live in the west of Ireland but Dublin say he is too young for it and that his mrsa could cause problems if it got into his blood...(has it in his lungs at mo!!)
Desperate to know if anybody has been in same boat??What would you suggest? Our doctor has said that if they cant get line in tomorrow that iv wise there is nothing more he can do!!!

Hi there,

I do NOT have a port a cath but I will most likely be getting on this coming January. I also cultures Psuedo and MRSA/Staph. My doctor has been encouraging me to get a port as well as the radiologists that have inserted my PICCs lately. I do not have problems once the line is in - but getting them in lately has been a hassle.

I will say that it may be an age thing with the MRSA and Psuedo more so than the MRSA and infections. I know staph can cause issues for people with surgical wounds and things, but I would think if it were a huge danger my docs would not be pushing me to get one.

I will give this background though - I am from the States and am 24. I have cultures Psuedo for as long as I can remember and MRSA/Staph for about 8-9 years now. I have always had regular peripheral IVs as a child and then started getting PICCs at about the age of 13 - 14.

I am actually going to be talking to my doc in more detail about ports this coming Monday. I will most likely be posting a blog about it so you can keep your eyes open for that and maybe some info in there will be useful for you.

Take Care,
Lindsey

I got MRSA and then 1.5 years later got a port. So it wasn't while I was actively fighting the MRSA, but the docs say I still have it to this day (I'm 22 now, got the port when I was 18), and it has caused no problems in my port.

Love the port!! If you can give the kid a break from all sorts of nasty lines by giving him a port, I say do it. If you have any port-specific questions, feel free to ask here, or contact me personally. I'm a port fan and when it comes to them, people tend to mention me. "Oh ports? Ask Emily." lol I'm hardly an expert, but if I can help, I will.

Hi Louieh1

Firstly I hope that the last attempt to place an IV line for Cian was successfull and he's doing ok.

I also have MRSA, psudo and a port. The MRSA isn't really a major issue with ports as long as you use the proper proceedure when using them - You have to be more carefull than when using a normal line. I have had a port for 10 years (I'm on my second one now). I had it replaced recently and there was never a question of not going ahead with the replacement because of the MRSA risk - the benifits of the port (ie being able to get the iv's) far outweighted any extra risk involved for me).

Maybe the fact that your son is so young is an issue but I think that your doctor simply saying that "there is nothing more he can do IV wise" is unacceptable! I would push to try and get other professional opinions. I have heard of children who have had ports at about 4 years of age. They did have some problems (not infections) with the port but I'm sure that their parents would now say that it was worth it.

Hope you don't mind but I have also PM'd you. I'm from Galway and have some experience of hospitals in Dublin.

Hi my daughter doesnt have mrsa, she grows the normal staph. She has had a PORT in since she was nine and it has been the biggest blessing. No more pain

I hope he can get a port real soon.

Good luck

Hi.
Today went ok but not really..
They could not get long line in arm but got 8 cms in foot and think that will do.(maybe if they flushed it regularly but came back from theatre and the doc didnt come down to give him his first iv's til about 7 hours later,)we don't have time to be messing with those things.
Your replies made me feel like you understood what i was going through and normally a very optimistic person I really haven't felt too strong the last few days.
Can i ask Irish david what a pm is?you said you pm"d me but i am new to this jargon but would really like to contact you if you don't mind.
have to go back to hospital now but will keep in touch.thanks.Lou
Don't ask for a lighter load but a stronger back.xx
