Air Purifiers

My husband went to a Home Builders Show this past weekend. (Made me nervous that he might get out the credit card!) He saw some super-duper air purifier. I'm not sure what the brand or anything was, but he heard such great reviews on it he is being tempted. (I'm skeptical and say of course they are going to tell great reviews on their product!)

Today they called him and offered him the demo product at 50% off. That would be $800!! I told him he had better not. We'll be paying off my infusion bill for years at this rate, as it is.

But he wants me to ask you all if an air purifier has made a difference for you.

I don't think I need one. But I'm asking you, because he's going to be asking me what you said.

I think they can help, but $800 or over seems a bit excessive. What does this thing do?
If you're in a house & have central air you can put filters in at the fan. Though running A/C or heating that much is bad for energy, environment, etc.
You want something that moves air with a fan, don't use an ionizer, it creates ozone (O3) which is bad for asthma & copd type lungs. There's a ton of air filters on the market using HEPA filters. I recommend it have a carbon pre-filter to get out the big dust & leave the HEPA to the small microbes & such. These can range from $75 to $300 or more depending on size of fan, filter, etc.
I usually just run mine at night, partially as a white noise generator. If it nice out & your allergies aren't bad, opening the windows is the best thing you can do for air quality. Indoor air is like 10 times more toxic than outdoor air (depending on where you live).
I'm curious about this $1600 air filter. If you have any other questions you can email me at erocka77 (at) gmail.com. I'm a mechanical engineer w/ CF & know a bit about air quality.

We have an Air purifier and I think it is worth it. My mom was a dealer for it but she didnt have enough businus so she sold out. I think they work great in our house. The smell is amazing when you walk in the house, it just smell fresh and clean. we even have multiple animals. I think the price was around $600.00 but well worth it. You can even get personal prufiers that are about the size or a pager and are like a hundred dollars.

Think any with the hepa filter are pretty good. We have a whirlpool whispersure which was one of the highest rated ones at the time and cost around $400; however, it was a gift from a family member, so we didn't spend that much. I know you can get one just as good at the hardware store for about a quarter of the cost.

Also, the prefilters which we change every 3 months cost about $30 for a package and the hepa filter itself runs about $100 and we change it each year.

DS' room smells sooo fresh and it's amazing all the crud it seems to take out of the air.

We also purchased an electric fire place when we did our addition that now comes with a standard air filter. Our split AC unit also comes with it, but has an ionizing feature, which we keep off due to concerns we'd heard about ozone, etc.
