Always always always take anything medical-related as carry on. It does NOT count in how much carry-on you're allowed. In other words, you're allowed the medical stuff, and THEN the same amount of carry on as anyone else.
And yes, bags do get lost. My bags got lost when I flew to Spain when I was 18. I was without them for 24 hours. If I hadn't had my meds in my carry on, I'd have been slightly screwed.

Just saw Froggy-Mama's blogspot and she got majorly hassled by some snooty airline employee about froggy's vest. Kept insisting she had to check it "didn't CARE if it was a $16,000 piece of medical equipment". Then when she realized froggy had her own ticket, then said it was allowable as her carry-on. This is the same airline that always gives talks on travelling with cf and the vest at the U of MN annual education day.
