Alaskan Cruise

I wanted to write to be sure to wear layers, so that you can take them off when you are inside the enclosed part of the boat and put back on for being in the open areas. It seems to be a really warm summer, at least it's been in the 70's in the Kenai area. It does tend to be cooler in August in Alaska and pretty chilly in the wind when you are standing on deck.

I have been on eight or nine cruises, and the Alaskan cruise was THE BEST. We went the last cruise of the season, and it was only cold once - when we went up next to a glacier and watched icebergs calve. The rest of the time, a light windbreaker or long sleeves was all that was needed.

Go and have a great time; it's a vacation you'll NEVER forget!

I am so glad everyone thinks it is a good idea! I am getting excited. We are looking to go dogsledding, take a float plane, and some other stuff. I would like to go hiking but I don't think I can do that yet. We are going the first week of August and going on a cruise that goes through the "Inner Passage".

Once we make more concrete plans I am sure I will be asking a lot of questions. We are still planning it. I am concerned about the clothes though. Would I need my down long jacket? That would take up one suitcase by itself!

I had on a T-shirt, sweat shirt and light jacket (wind breaker would probably be best). I took off the sweat shirt and light jacket while inside the enclosed part of the boat and wore them while outside. I wouldn't recommend your down coat. You might pack a light pair of gloves if you want to stand at the front of the boat sometimes. My hands did get cold from taking pictures. My feet, however, did not get cold and I was wearing sandels with no socks.
