I normally take Albuterol/Atrovent nebs every six hours. When I am sick, I do my treatments every four hours. I hope Emily feels better soon!

I am not clear on what the conversion is between albuteral via neb vs. inhaler; how much you get per puff vs. when you neb it and that kind of frustrates me too since I like to understand better what exactly she is taking. It's one of those things I never think to explicitly ask at her clinic visits.

Her neb solution is .083%; 2.5mg/3mL.

The Ventolin is 90mcg per puff... different unit of measure.

I also just neb more frequently but have not thought of doubling the dose. I imagine doing it not often wouldnt cause to many consequences but daily would take its toll.

I personally only like to neb my xopenex (a little different than albuterol but essentially the same), I feel like it just moistens (ugh its late and cannot think of how to spell that) up my lungs a bit, also allows me 10 whole minutes to breathe it in and get them opened up for the mucus thinners. I know it adds more time overall but the inhaled xopenex just doesnt do it for me.

I normally only do 2-3 treatments when not sick and when I am sick, I only do treatments 4 times a day, not every 4 hours (I need my sleep haha even in the hospital no night treatments for me).

Thank you so much everyone. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> Nebbing the albuteral for a few days now has made a BIG difference vs. the inhaler. In the past when sick just increasing the puffs has been ok but this time around I've seen a huge difference in nebbing. I'll have to keep it in mind to try both ways even if she seems able to inhale without much coughing next time around. Emily is not happy about all the extra nebbing since she is used to inhalers and only having to neb Pulmozyme, but she's been cooperating- I think she is noticing that she feels better. I think we need some new neb cups, though... one vial of Albuteral is taking a good 12min to get through (so I've just been doing it more often, as several of you posted, with excellent results.)

And thanks for checking in with us... We started an abx yesterday and she is continuing to cough up lots of stuff esp when vesting; but not getting worse at least. Her dr has told me that if she's not markedly better by Wed/Thurs he wanted to hear back from me and we'd start an oral steroid and/or change things, etc. He wants her vesting every 4hrs while she's awake. She was breathing about twice as fast as she usually does when I called and he was fairly sure it was due to fever, so wants me to keep her temp down as much as I can to see if that normalizes things. She did better last night. If breathing picks up again without fever I have to call right back.
