gee linds, how petty can some surgeons be! ive never heard of anything so silly happening. maybe you guys should ask the surgeons if they drink and if they do, ask them if THEY are serious about being a surgeon lol. i understand that most rules are needed but how they can judge you on a drink when you havent even been listed is beyond me. next minute they will be asking you what you did when you were 16! i agree that ringing up one of the nurses is a good idea. at least if they give bree the ok then she has a leg to stand on if someone starts questioning her about it.

Okay I have to post this and it may sound snide but it is bothering me Kylie. No offense but I wouldn't consider a surgeon or transplant doc petty for not wanting me to drink and having issues with it if I do it frequently.

You are going to be taking some pretty heavy meds post transplant - many of which effect your liver and kidneys. Alcohol is hard on those organs. I would think it would be common sense to want to make sure you have someone that can refrain from drinking in situations where it is needed or recommended. It may not be the case as I am not a doctor and I don't know what they think. I am just saying my opinion you (anyone for any Tx workup) needs to look at it like thay are going into a job interview. You want to put your best foot forward. If you think you can do that after drinking a few then so be it (I am not trying to pass judgement) I am just saying my opinion.

But honestly the criticism of a doctor asking or holding a judgement of a patient based on their alcohol consumption is irritating to me as it seems like a valid thing - you aren't takling about a "simple" breathing test or a "petty" flu shot. You are talking about a process that will ultimately effect every part of your body and you want to be sure that you are able to handle it. Also think of this ... you drink fine (again no criticism) but do you really want to be drinking while you are waiting and then be turned away when "the call" does come because you are too hammered or have been drinking too much to undergo the surgery.

So yeah you may find it petty but I think it is a valid concern for a doc in that situation to take interest in because it ultimately may effect your care or your ability to get a transplant (in the event as I mentioned above you are drinking while you are waiting and have had too much). It is not to say that they think you are an alcoholic I am just saying it is a factor that I am sure they take into consideration.

I just want to put this out there - this post is not meant to make Bree or theDUDE feel badly. I don't care either way if you drink or how much. I was just peeved at reading the thoughts of the docs being petty and needing their heads checked because they care if you drink. I just know that was a question I was asked repeatedly throughout my workup by several docs. The docs, nurses, social workers a LOT of people asked that question. I drink on occasion but normally only twice a year was my response to them (as it is true my bday and New Years are my days) they told me they were glad cause the same thing I mentioned above. The meds can be harsh on some organ systems and the less you drink the better it may be for the rest of your body post. Not to say people don't drink post, but it is something they are concerned with. I am not saying and I doubt they would turn you down simply based on alcohol consumption - unless it was already effecting your body or if it was a very frequent thing. I was just saying to be careful as each doctor or center is going to have a different view of it.

I would hate to see an innocent decision effect a docs opinion of a patient that would be perfectly compliant and suitable for transplant - if that is what they have chosen. Not saying that it would happen just saying it is possible (as many things are) and I would call and follow up with your clinic if you are concerned with it. We can speculate but only they can tell you what they would like you to do. I am sure they understand with your age that drinking is something you do on occasion - so I am sure it is no shock, but having the self discipline to refrain in the days before your testing begins may be something they take into account.

Sorry if this offended anyone - especially TheDUDE or Bree as that was not my intention. You know I have nothing but love for you Bree - so please don't take that the wrong way I am just being honest.

And as for if the surgeons drink or the docs ... FYI ANY medical professional that is ON CALL is not allowed to drink in the period of time they are oncall as they might be needed (at least in the US - by what I have been told), SO if their is a chance that they will be called in to perform surgery or deal with patients they do NOT drink. What they do on their own time who cares. It is a similar situation - consider yourself on call for your eval don't drink so you can be at your best for that. I would save the wild night of partying for after your eval. You will be able to really enjoy it then anyway and consider it a last hooray IF they want you to refrain while waiting. I say IF because they may not care either way only they know what they want.

one more thing is, what if somebody was not 21, and still has a few drinks, maybe once a week, i am just speaking hypotheticaly (i know i spelled that wrong), do you think that would upset the doctor/nurse?

I don't know

I wouldn't think so to me a drink is a drink regardless of age - assuming we are not talking about a 10 year old or something lol.

I say late teens and up a drink is a drink (to ME). I would just talk to them about it. Maybe put it in "hypothetical" terms. Ask them their opinions IF the person waiting was 21 - say if I was 20 I would say this

If I turn 21 before I am called would it be okay if I had a few drinks? What about afterwards - meaning after transplant is it okay for me to have a drink every now and then?

If you want to know about now - if you or anyone else is under the age of 21 just flat out ask. Trust me they have probably heard worse questions lol.
